It has got to be said, I am quite the anthem junkie. One thing that's always fascinated me is the TV sign-off. Before the advent of twenty-four-hour television, channels would shut off broadcasts at a given time each night and show a "sign-off" to tell viewers to turn off the TV. Most channels all around the world (including this one) showed the national anthem accompanied by patriotic images or videos; others (Like RTÉ in Ireland) would broadcast a prayer or religious song. The practice of "signing-off" has largely grown out of fashion around much of the world because TV channels either show programming through the night or fill the wee hours with advertising. However, a few local stations in the USA have reintroduced the practice as a means to instil patriotism and Radio 4 in the UK also still plays "God Save the Queen" daily. Finding the anthem sign-off for TV in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic was difficult to say the least. There seem to be a lot of videos on English-speaking youtube of the anthem itself, but none of the wider sign-off process around it. I had heard of a USSR anthem sign-off in various forums but I never found a video of it. In fact it was only through the help of Yandex ("Russian Google") and "Google Translate" that I was able to find this archive footage on a Russian-language site. It shows the end of day sign off from the 1980s. To aid English-language viewers, I have added subtitles throughout this video showing a translation of the original Russian anthem. Please turn on "closed captions" and select "English" if you would like to see them (the translation is an original by myself, feel free to use it for any use whatsoever). This video is particularly interesting because it features the famous "switch off your TV" notice at the very end. Legend has it that this was included because Soviet TVs had a nasty habit of exploding and starting house fires when they were left on overnight. I translated and uploaded this USSR TV startup video for fellow anthem-enthusiasts and it is NOT a political endorsement or message of any kind. Please keep the comments civil. Furthermore Russian copyright law declares that all Russian or Soviet state symbols (communism, socialism and so on) including this anthem are in the public domain.

If you take one minute today to watch something, watch this 🎞 It's a thought-provoking short by a Korean-Canadian director Kevin Jin Kwan Kim about the challenges of immigrant kids translating for their parents 🗺 The trend has always been the same, whether I've worked with newly-arrived Somali, Latino, Syrian or Ukrainian families in Norway, the US, France or Slovakia 👨👩👧👧 The kids would generally pick up the new language much quicker and become natural translators for their parents and anyone in the community who needed help getting around. It's quicker that way, and free, but at age ten you might imagine better things to do with your time than translating "social security number" or "taxpayer ID" into Somali. And that's the least distressing of the stuff you might need to translate. ⚠️ Friends, if you have the means, always choose a professional interpreter when communicating with immigrant clients, research informants, potential employees... Shield the children from having to be cultural mediators when they themselves might need extra support- or simply want to be kids. And even with limited options, we now have ample access to free translation and interpretation tools online. Make use of them all! 👾 + When possible, support ways in which immigrants can learn the local language for free and at hours that are convenient for them. Meet them where they are at.
