Though it's customary to post updates from EuroCIS - The Leading Trade Fair for Retail Technology to boost exposure, we were too immersed in work to post. Yet, after a weekend dedicated to sorting things out, what struck me most is a video I captured at a #grocery #store in #Düsseldorf. What's in the video? A store, where the #retailer probably runs a Pilot/POC for some #retailtechnology, which is, to put it gently, not scalable! The video shows a small portion of a shop with over 700 cameras and sensors installed on specific tracks (yes, I counted!). What's the problem? Are there #retailers that could justify installing and maintaining so much hardware across all of their stores? Definitely not. Returning to the Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, many sensor technologies and smart hardware for monitoring #shopper behavior have been presented, but none of these technologies are scalable. You can't just stick a sensor every 3-4 meters... In one of the buildings, a VP product of a reputable company told me they could cover every step of the customer journey in the store... I asked how it's economically feasible? The answer was: 'no one does it, they only do #flagshipstore and/or research stores'. Do you see the problem? Who can extrapolate the behavior of shoppers in #Berlin to that of shoppers in #Duisburg? To learn from #newyork shoppers about the behavior of shoppers in #Ketchikan, #Alaska, and from #telaviv shoppers about the behavior of shoppers in #Dimona? The #retailindustry needs to shift to scalable technologies; there's no point in installing technology if there's no possibility to install it in most/all network stores. It might take a few years to cover big chains, yet it is time to shift from research to practical store operations tools. iCape's technology has been developed from this work assumption!
