I am thrilled that Dickinson Wright's 2023 DEI Annual Report is published! I am immensely proud of DW's continued commitment to this work and my colleagues' tireless efforts throughout the year. There is so much good stuff happening in this report. It is no secret that the legal profession is at an inflection point right now with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Diversity programs in the public and private sector have faced enormous scrutiny since the Supreme Court's decision in SFFA v. Harvard last summer. Law firms like ours have increasingly faced pressure—including new rounds of litigation—to draw back or discontinue entirely many of the diversity initiatives that make us most proud. But in the face of these headwinds, Dickinson Wright has pressed forward. And as the pages of this report indicate, we did so undaunted and with more energy than ever. Whether through service projects that directly impact communities where we have offices, mentorship and sponsorship programs that strengthen our attorney pipelines, or internal initiatives that help our people connect with and better understand each other in our increasingly hybrid world, DW has stayed the course. As our CEO says in his opening message: this is always part of who we are. It is not lost on me that all eyes remain on DEI, and I am very aware that the scrutiny upon diversity initiatives is likely to increase this year. But as someone who does this for a living, this is attention that I gladly welcome. On the one hand, I am confident that our body of work will both withstand inquiry and also inspire new allies to action. But more fundamentally, I remain convinced that the practice of law is healthier, fairer, and more just when attorneys with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences are participating in it. This is something worth fighting for. I hope the pages of this report convince you of the same and encourage you to find your own ways to get involved. Onward!

Friday Fun: The DEI Detective🕵️♀️ Happy Friday, everyone! Let's kick off the weekend with a fun story about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Once upon a time in the bustling city of Diversityville, there was a legendary detective named Detective Inclusion. One bright and sunny day, she got a frantic call from Mr. Equitas, the CEO of Equitas Enterprises. Despite their best efforts, their DEI strategies just weren’t cutting it, and the workplace was in disarray. Detective Inclusion quickly gathered her team: Agent Equity, the champion of fairness, and Agent Diversity, who brought a fresh perspective to every case. They arrived at Equitas Enterprises and immediately spotted the problems. Employees were cliqued up in groups and not collaborating with others. The company had great DEI policies, but they weren’t being enforced consistently. And the leadership team didn’t reflect the diversity of the workforce. Rolling up their sleeves, Detective Inclusion and her team sprang into action. They organized team-building activities to mix things up and get people working together. They made sure the DEI policies were enforced fairly across the board. And they worked on developing a more inclusive leadership pipeline. The transformation was magical. Teams collaborated better, employees felt valued and heard, and the leadership became more diverse and inclusive. Equitas Enterprises not only improved its DEI outcomes but also saw a boost in overall performance and employee satisfaction. And so, the DEI Detective Agency saved the day yet again, proving that a little teamwork, fairness, and inclusive leadership can go a long way. Let’s all take a page from Detective Inclusion’s book and continue to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplaces.
