I truly believe that our legacy in life is how much we manage to positively #impact other people’s lives. I share here a true story that is a good example of how it can happen in a corporate environment. During a regular talent review in a large multinational company, the HR team reported to the recently arrived CHRO (let’s call her Sandra) the best talent on the team, those who were the #highpotentials and #bestperformers. Lisa was the one reported to be on the top of the list.  Later in the meeting, the discussion was on the open positions, and one of them was particularly interesting and challenging. Sandra immediately suggested that Lisa should be offered the job, as it could be a good development opportunity for the best performer.  From her point of view, she was discussing the obvious thing to do. The team reacted saying that Lisa’s current boss could not let her go, since she was needed where she was. At the end, they understood that Sandra was giving an order, talked to Lisa and she accepted the challenge. Sandra eventually left the company and lost contact with Lisa. Many years later they #reconnected, and Lisa acknowledged how much that movement had positively impacted her #career. That role took her out of her comfort zone and was the #turningpoint from a middle manager to a #leadership position. She was grateful for Sandra even if she had never mentioned it to her. I share this here, as sometimes we don’t realize how much the obvious for us may not be so obvious for others; and that simple actions and attitudes can make a huge difference for someone else. I’ve been with her through the ups and downs of the job search process as she deliberately looked for a next level role where she could make a difference She’s had rejections and come up as the 2nd choice on several occasions so I’m happy that she’s finally landed a CEO role that matches her talents. She’s even had to turn a final interview selection process for another CEO role at the same time because she’s landed the role she really wanted. 😎 All those rejections helped her to get better at refining her message to help her land the role she really wanted so nothing is ever wasted. I’ve watched this amazing leader transform from someone who was not ready yet, to confidently communicating the value she brings to the table which has also meant a significant pay rise to go with the additional responsibilities. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to disrupt the status quo if you believe you’re meant for more. This pressing challenge isn’t unique to CEOs. These challenges are similar across all roles and industries. But the real challenge at hand is about navigating the chaos in our VUCA world. The one certainty today is that we are on a collision course with more issues, challenges, and changes than we have ever had to deal with as leaders before in our history. Rethinking leadership is key. Today’s view of leadership is managing people and tasks.
