Free online FAO facilitated course on Developing an Anticipatory Action System It is time for you to take a course on Anticipatory Action System. Acting early before a disaster has actually happened or reached its peak is critical: it can save lives and protect livelihoods from the immediate shocks, as well as protecting long-term development gains by increasing the resilience of local communities over time. Using a series of examples and case studies from different countries and contexts, this course provides guidance to set-up an anticipatory action system, i.e. a set of provisions to link early warning signals to anticipatory action options and implementation arrangements. The course focuses on anticipatory action in the context of food security and agriculture. This course was originally published in November 2020 and updated in May 2023.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Somalia recently held a meeting with the Honorable Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons to explore potential areas for collaboration. During this meeting, Ms. Mary Otieno, UNFPA Representative, and Ms. Safia Mohamed, NCRI Commissioner, identified several key areas of mutual interest aligned with their respective mandates. They committed to working together to foster durable solutions and provide sustainable long-term support to the people of Somalia.

The recently released Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report shows that food security in Somalia remains fragile. Last year, Somalia faced a critical situation, close to falling into famine after the longest drought in 40 years. Thanks to the efforts of donors, the Government, partners, and communities, we averted that crisis and set vulnerable populations on the path to recovery. We've made significant progress, which should not go unnoticed—especially in a challenging operational context like Somalia. However, this progress is at risk if we don't continue to strengthen resilience. At WFP Somalia, we are sounding the alarm. While we continue providing immediate assistance, we are also ramping up climate-smart solutions and social protection measures to ensure long-term resilience. But we can’t do this alone. Now is the time to act—not when the next emergency strikes. The latest La Niña forecasts indicate below-average rainfall between October and December 2024, putting communities at risk again. If we don’t act now, the gains we’ve made in food security could quickly be undone. https://lnkd.in/gdxr8zyU

The Private Sector is pivotal to addressing cross border issues on SRH and GBV programs. I have just provided an update on the humanitarian situation in Somalia at the ongoing United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Retreat in Naivasha, Kenya which is focused on developing cross-border strategies in the Horn of Africa. In my presentation, I underscored the importance of engaging the private sector due to their extensive reach, capabilities, and influence in the region. We have had robust presentations from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda, Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan country offices. Connecting Business Initiative
