MALAYSIA ENERGY CARBON CAPTURE AND STORAGE #Opportunity: Studies show Malaysia's offshore areas have excellent potential for storing captured carbon dioxide (CO2) underground. Depleted oilfields offer ideal storage locations. #Goal: Malaysia, through Petronas (the national oil and gas company), aims to become a regional hub for storing CO2 captured by industries around the world. This captured CO2 would be permanently stored underground, preventing its release into the atmosphere. #Project: Petronas is building a massive CCS project in the Kasawari gas field, expected to be operational in 2026. This project will capture and store an impressive 3.3 million tonnes of CO2 annually, making it one of the biggest offshore CCS initiatives globally. Malaysia's total offshore CO2 storage potential is estimated at a massive 500 million tonnes, opening doors for even more CCS projects in the future. #Benefit: CCS deployment on a large scale could create a whole new industry in Malaysia, boosting economic growth and job creation. #Challenge: Regulatory frameworks for CCS are still under development, slowing down progress. Petronas, along with its partners, is advocating for strong regulations and policies to facilitate CCS projects. #Overall, Malaysia is taking a proactive approach to CCS technology, aiming to capitalize on its geological advantages and become a leader in the regional fight against climate change. In Malaysia, there is an M3 depleted field offshore, located in Sarawak. It was recently announced that a new group, made up of PETRONAS, PETROS and a Japanese Consortium have signed a Storage Site Agreement (SSA) for this area. The companies have agreed on signing this agreement, because of the benefits the SSA will bring to the project the businesses are looking to focus on. The SSA will enable the feasibility study of the Co2 storage sites, with the first one to be addressed being the M3 depleted field, which is a CCS project. The agreement will also open the door for planning of relevant Co2 storage site development and this will involve onshore terminals and transportation pipelines, plus the assessment of its techno-commercial feasibility. PETRONAS Plots Ambitious Expansion of Northern CCS Hub PETRONAS is accelerating its green ambitions with a major push to develop a Northern Carbon Capture and Storage (#CCS) hub in #Terengganu. The energy giant has initiated a five-month pre-FEED study to optimize onshore infrastructure for the project, signaling a significant step towards its 2050 net zero target. This strategic move underscores PETRONAS’ commitment to tackling climate change and supporting Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap. By establishing a CCS hub capable of capturing and storing up to 5 million tonnes of CO2 annually, the company is poised to become a regional leader in carbon reduction. The heart of the project lies in a comprehensive assessment of onshore terminal, jetty, and pipeline requirements. With Kertih Port Sdn Bhd’s land earmarked as a potential site, PETRONAS is meticulously evaluating the best approach to handle liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) and ensure seamless storage before injection. This announcement comes on the heels of another milestone achieved by PETRONAS’ CCS subsidiary, PCCSS. The recent signing of a land rental agreement for the Southern CCS Hub in Kuantan further solidifies the company’s position as a driving force in Malaysia’s low-carbon future. By investing in cutting-edge CCS technology and infrastructure, PETRONAS is not only safeguarding the environment but also creating new opportunities for economic growth and job creation. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐤 - 𝐆𝐇𝐕 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟑 Are you curious about the challenges of producing high-contaminant gas? The raw gas is high in contaminants like CO2, which significantly impacts the gas's heating value (GHV) and presents unique operational challenges. Malaysia is targeting stranded high-carbon-dioxide (CO2) gas fields for development to support long-term natural gas production targets. The country is home to a large number of undeveloped high-CO2 gas fields. For example, the K5 gas field, located offshore Sarawak and discovered in 1970, is estimated to contain 21 trillion cubic feet of gas with 50% CO2 content. Despite the challenges, Petronas has earmarked US$1 billion (RM4.69 billion) to develop the field. The removal of contaminants is crucial as it directly influences the gas's heating value (GHV), which in turn affects the economic viability and suitability for end-users. [ Mega #FLNG Facility ] Petronas' Nearshore FLNG Facility Construction Kickoff This is a positive development for Malaysia's oil and gas sector. It demonstrates Petronas' commitment to innovation and positions the country as a frontrunner in sustainable LNG production. Project: Petronas' first nearshore floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility, also the third FLNG facility overall. Significance: This is a groundbreaking project and the first of its kind in Malaysia. Location: Construction began at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje Island, South Korea. Once operational, it will be moored at the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park in Sabah. Production Capacity: Designed to produce up to 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG. Target Operation Date: Second half of 2027. Sustainability Features: The facility incorporates energy-efficient technologies to reduce its carbon footprint. Reports indicate that JGC, a Japanese engineering contractor, is the frontrunner to secure the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for bp's $2.6 billion carbon capture and re-compression (UCC) project at the Tangguh LNG facility in Indonesia. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) offers a powerful toolbox of technologies to address both global energy demands and climate concerns. This suite of technologies focuses on capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from large industrial sources. The captured CO2 is then transported via pipelines, ships, trains, or trucks for various applications. One key use is Enhanced Gas Recovery (EGR), where the CO2 is permanently stored underground. Given the limited options for reducing emissions from heavy industries, CCUS is a crucial tool for achieving net zero targets.
