Plans to build out extensive subsea grids to connect the growing number of offshore wind farms have been set out in the first comprehensive cross-border review of existing offshore grid capacity in the EU. While we, Portunus Solutions, mostly have been talking about solving problems within fixed offshore wind with the PSS, we are of the view that similar problems will, and are, taking place in, but not limited to, floating offshore wind (FOW), floating solar, wave, tidal, OTEC and telecom cables. Floating offshore wind is still in its early innings from an industrial scale operational standpoint. Narrowing in on the dynamic cable infrastructure, there are two big challenges to tackle: 1. The "lazy S" cable configuration in limited water depths with seabed anchoring 2. Replacing the anchoring deadweight The PSS would be a cheaper and better alternative than currently available solutions, offloading the dynamic cable and installation methodologies from managing the anchor weights. Stabilisation of the cable can be closely integrated with the mooring anchoring system.
