As a recent postgraduate student in data science, I have applied for over 100 jobs in the UK in the nine months since I graduated. I have been invited for ten or more interviews, but as I get to the final round, I frequently hear the phrases "we found another candidate whose educational or work experience is more aligned to the posted job role" or "due to lack of experience, we cannot hire you." I do not understand how someone can expect experience if they are applying for entry-level positions.
It is very frustrating indeed
That must be so frustrating! Agree with Mukto Adash - skills and experience can be developed in many ways. So showcase everything you have done - via clubs, volunteering, whatever, to demonstrate anything which fits with the job spec. If you’re a recent graduate maybe you were on the committee of a society so have developed leadership skills or got experience organising events. Perhaps you have a hobby which is relevant. Mine everything you have and present it in a work- related context. You might find you have way more experience than you thought. Good luck!
Exactly
I do feel your frustration for I am a graduate of healthcare management and do to lack of experience I am over looked by companies. I have revised my resume so many times. I wish the best in a manager seeing the best for you to obtain a position in your career.
Welcome to my life
What about applying for short-term contract? Just to get the experience thereafter. Sometimes short-term can become long-term food for thought.
My thoughts are of the heart not business oriented exactly at this point. As a single mother of three wonderful children two of which I am supporting with little help, you do not have time to invest in companies giving you hope for a job to be told sorry we are moving forward with another option, best of luck. I have been working on jobs that do not even cover my cost, so multiple side gig jobs I work to just feed my children and pay what other expenses I can. I have done the game of govt assistance and I do not have time to paperwork chase, when it all in the system with a touch of a button. I have felt in battle with my challenge but refuse to fail my children. Most hr departments must meet quotas as most areas of business do. Though giving false hope to someone educated, willing, and needing a chance at a career of employment is degrading. I have been through enough business 101 courses, started to develop a opportunity from companies that brand name an individual, worked in hr department with learning the expectations for employees and contractors to know the cycle of employment. If the job force is ever going to change this cycle will have to be reevaluated for better probability to business and job seeker.
Hi Akhil, I think try diverting to other roles now other than data science as usual in UK data science hiring is mostly in mid or senior roles. I suggest to be patient and for now take any role you get for starters. Hope this helps🙂
Same problem here 🤦♂️
