NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s #IngenuityMarshelicopter #ChickenPlates #PPE has had a rough landing on its 72nd and final mission, suffering a “brown-out” and crash landing. NASA plans to wiggle its wings to determine the extent of the damage and the cause of the rough landing. The cause of the damage to the helicopter's blades is still unclear, but among other scenarios, it could be a decrease in power during landing. Teddy Tzanetos, the Ingenuity Project Manager at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration , and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory are still uncertain about the cause of the damage. I wanted to make an infographic on this topic because I found this mission to be one of the many, very successful missions because the amount of data was recovered from this mission. By now, many of you have likely seen the incredible footage of SpaceX’s Starship booster successfully returning to land on its fifth test flight, you can see exactly what this means for the SpaceX team! While it’s a huge milestone, the broader implications for the future of humanity in space are even more exciting. When fully operational, Starship will be able to carry 150+ tons of payload to LEO - nearly six times the capacity of the Falcon 9. Starship's payload carrying capabilities and re-usability will signal a new era of space development, enabling the launch of "mega-class" satellites like the technology being developed by brothers Karan Kunjur & Neel Kunjur at K2 Space Corporation. And by 2026, Starship will be used to land man back on the moon during the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Artemis III mission. #Contingency operations are common in the #NASA ecosystem because spaceflight is somewhat unpredictable even after many replications. Preparing #alternative scenarios within and across #missions is part of NASA's enterprise #risk management. The attendant risk-informed decision making is enormously difficult when alternatives bring enormous #costs. Best practices in #megaproject management require that such planning for contingencies, with explicit implications for cost alternatives, is visible early on in the budgeting process. #NASA is not perfect in this respect, but it is far better than most megaproject enterprises in that it always is ready to learn. NASA is always willing to #improve at every level of the enterprise even when it is publicly painful to do so. This capacity derives from the #valuesystem of #science that is at the core of the NASA culture.
