Breaking News: Swedish First Hill Expansion Underway Swedish Health Services is embarking on the highly anticipated North Tower project at its First Hill campus. Projected to open in Fall 2027, this 12-story building is our organization’s most ambitious endeavor in our 114-year history. Swedish President and CEO, Elizabeth Wako, M.D. foresees this landmark project as "among the largest health care investments in the country."   The state-of-the-art building is designed to meet our community’s ever-growing health care needs. Located at the Corner of Marion Street and Minor Avenue, the building will include: ·        New surgery center: 24 advanced operating suites, with state-of-the-art technology to support the evolving delivery of surgical services.  ·        New emergency department (ED).  ·        72 acuity-adaptable intensive care unit (ICU) beds ·        New centralized imaging facilities   Looking ahead, the Block 95 Tower, a future expansion, further cements Swedish's commitment to innovation and excellence. GE HealthCare and Tampa General Hospital (TGH) have expanded their long-standing partnership through a new agreement. Under this deal, GE HealthCare will deploy its advanced imaging and ultrasound technology solutions across TGH Imaging's outpatient facilities throughout Florida. The goal is to enable more precise and timely diagnoses for patients, leading to improved treatment plans and better outcomes. TGH president John D. Couris stated this investment in GE's technologies aims to "transform health care through innovation and technology" and enhance the patient experience. TGH Imaging provides radiology services at 21 locations, with over 65 board-certified radiologists across 11 subspecialties. GE's imaging tech will help these radiologists provide faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatment planning. The partnership began in 2019 with GE's Command Center Software deployment. Last year, TGH was the first in Florida to install GE's Omni Legend digital PET/CT system. We can’t stop thinking about how remarkable Liza Josias’s panel at SXSW was! She discussed Urban Air Mobility and the importance of engaging communities to highlight the benefits of it.  She shared, “We have the opportunity to challenge assumptions and deeply consider how UAM could benefit communities, especially in areas seemingly unrelated to mobility. For example, there is often a long waiting list to see medical specialists. With the availability of UAM flights, medical organizations could soon schedule their clinicians more flexibly. Instead of needing doctors to stick to a rigid schedule and drive across the city to different clinics each week, UAM could give doctors back that time, allowing them to serve more patients or maybe perform an additional surgery each week.”    #MobilityReimagined 

After conversations with over 50 hospitals across Denmark, the US, and the UK, one thing is crystal clear: MRI safety practices vary drastically, and there's an undeniable need for a unified approach. From hospitals that exercise extreme caution, rejecting patients with coronary stents, to others scanning pacemakers without protocols – the spectrum is wide and quite perplexing. This not only highlights different safety perspectives but also underscores a widespread issue: The tedious task of implant safety research. In many hospitals, the burden of this research falls on a few knowledgeable individuals. Their departure can leave a gaping hole in the department's safety protocol. Larger hospitals often have dedicated teams for this, but the everyday radiographer still spends considerable time seeking approvals for scans, etc., leading to inefficiencies and delays. Here’s where technology can be pivotal. Imagine a solution that automates implant safety research, allowing radiographers to focus on their core skill: MRI scanning. Why should highly trained professionals spend their time scouring Google for safety data? This global dialogue has led me to a pivotal realization: By embracing tech solutions, we can streamline MRI safety processes and optimize efficiency and patient care.

Each year, millions of MRI scans are performed, providing invaluable insights into patient health. However, ensuring these scans are safe and effective requires strict adherence to safety protocols. From screening for metal objects to using appropriate ear protection, every step is vital. As radiologists, we must stay vigilant and updated on best practices. Join us in prioritizing MRI safety, not just this week, but every day. The Radiology Report Podcast has an episode on MR Safety featuring Tobias Gilk, an MR safety expert, where him and Daniel Arnold discuss best practices for creating a safe imaging environment. Tobias shares his background and journey to becoming an MRI safety expert, which started as an architect with a passion for creating safe spaces. Tobias explains the importance of MR safety and the worst things that can happen if it is not prioritized. He also sheds light on some of the most common safety issues that he has observed in MRI facilities and discusses the lack of regulations in MR Safety. Daniel and Tobias also discuss Tobias' MR safety courses and who can benefit from them. Tobias explains that the courses are designed for a wide range of professionals, including MRI technologists, radiologists, administrators - essentially anybody who has a direct role in policies, procedures, and practices related to the safety of patients in the MRI environment.
