Hydrographic surveys play a critical role in port development and navigation safety. Similar to land surveyors, hydrographers are typically the first and last professionals to engage with a project site. The attached video presents a chart that illustrates terrain changes within the entrance channel of a marina in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The objective of the survey was to identify shallow features within the channel that could pose navigational hazards. For this project, a multibeam sonar system was employed, ensuring 100% coverage of the seafloor. This comprehensive coverage enhances the confidence in detecting potential navigational obstructions. In addition to locating and determining the depth of these hazards, the survey data also facilitates accurate calculations of dredging volumes based on the surface topography. 🌊 You know why it's crucial where you measure waves? Waves are random and complex. Describing them precisely can be a challenge! Where you measure waves makes a significant difference in your offshore operations! Understanding wave behavior is crucial for various reasons: 1 - Measuring waves in waters with varying bathymetry can lead to different results. Waves interact with the seafloor, and these interactions can influence their characteristics. So, the depth of the water and the shape of the seafloor matter! 2 - In some cases, areas might experience larger waves due to nearby structures, causing potential challenges for navigation or operations. 3 - Coastal engineers need accurate wave measurements to design structures that can withstand the forces of nature. 4 - Remember, though, that differing results in wave measurements aren't necessarily wrong. Whilst on the degree programme, it affirmed my interest in the Maritime environment, and I love my career working at the Port of Dover.   My primary job function is to carry out hydrographic surveys which involves mapping the seabed to visualise the underwater topography and identifying areas within the Port that may require dredging. ●Tide Level in Hydrographic Surveys Tide level is a critical factor in hydrographic surveys, as it directly affects the accuracy of depth measurements. To ensure reliable data, hydrographic surveyors must account for the rise and fall of the sea surface during the survey. Here's how tide level is used in hydrographic surveying. ● Measuring Tides Tide gauges are used to record periodic tidal elevation data during a hydrographic survey. These gauges continuously measure the water level against a pre-defined datum, allowing the gradual changes in sea surface height to be incorporated into the bathymetry data. Tide gauge data can be recorded locally and downloaded after the survey, or transmitted in real-time to the survey vessel via radio modem. In the latter case, the hydrographic acquisition software or echo sounder is configured to accept the tidal elevation data in real-time. ● Tide Zoning To account for variations in tidal characteristics across a survey area, the region is divided into discrete tidal zones. These zones are defined by polygons with similar tidal properties, such as mean range of tide and time of tide progression. Tidal correctors are then applied uniformly throughout each assigned zone, allowing for more accurate tide reduction of soundings. Co-tidal lines, based on computed datums and tide intervals, are used to determine the discrete zones. ● Tide Reduction The recorded tide data is used to reduce or correct the depth soundings to a standard chart datum, such as Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW). This process involves subtracting the observed tide level from the measured depth at the time of the sounding, ensuring that the final depth values represent the true seafloor topography. Accurate tide reduction is crucial for producing reliable nautical charts and ensuring safe navigation. It also supports various applications, such as maritime navigation, environmental monitoring, and long-term sea level studies. We aim to understand how rapid flows, like ocean currents and submarine landslides, induce erosion around offshore structures on the seafloor. 🌊 To tackle this, Erik Sørlie recently developed a new experimental setup to study seafloor erosion, using real soil samples from the Norwegian seafloor!
