It’s a piece of tech so advanced, but I really can't help but ask - "but why?" It’s like buying a sports car in downtown traffic; sure, it can go zero to sixty in three seconds, but will you ever really use it when you’re just trying to find parking at the grocery store? But I'd be ignorant to claim it's just a fancy gadget; we're stepping into a grand experiment in perception. The passthrough video feature, for example, is so groundbreaking that it promises to turn reality into something you can swipe away. But, as with all great powers, comes the great potential for a nosedive into the uncanny valley. The more time we spend in these tailored realities, the more we risk becoming estranged from the one reality we share. My #VisionPro crashed, and it was the end of the experiment; for now. I had a love-hate relationship with my Apple #VisionPro for weeks. I did return mine, although not entirely of my choosing. You see, apparently, mine was perhaps the only one that crashed in the field. I went to use it and it wouldn't turn on. Looking at the front lens (accidentally - I put it down to use my laptop and happened to look at it before putting the protective cover back on), I noticed a solid white triangle with an "!" in the middle. I wish now I had taken a picture of it with the crash indicator. At the time it wasn't significant because I assumed this was perhaps a low battery warning or a sensor blocked indicator. Nope. Contacting Apple, I was told "wow - that's new - yours crashed". After opening an Apple support ticket, I brought mine back to the Apple Store, where I was approached by a few Apple reps asking me about how it happened, and saying they had never seen one crash. I was eventually able to bring mine back to life with a battery disconnect/reconnect. Apple did offer me a replacement unit with extended return, but I declined. The reason I declined was similar to the sentiments in this interview. The problem with adoption overall I believe is because people don't see the value in it because they're comparing it to the Oculus or other VR headset. That's an invalid comparison. This isn't a VR headset. But for me, who needs it for pure productivity there are three things which hurt the value proposition. 1. Battery life. I don't mind the tethered connection, but if you gave me a USB-C cable so I could plug the Vision Pro into my MacBook and didn't need the brick, I'd be all in. Having to carry a battery around which is really only good for a short time, when you're sitting at a desk and don't need a battery is cumbersome. This can be easily fixed with a new accessory. 2. Comfort. Apple did a great job of designing the band and the light shield pads, but moving your head around too much over time can get uncomfortable on the face (cheek bones and forehead). I don't find the unit too heavy for me overall, and didn't have neck issues as some have reported. 3. Productivity. I don't need more spacial apps. I need more support for Enterprise security and MDM, or full #Jamf support so I can use the Vision Pro as a laptop replacement. Some of this is being addressed in 1.1 (which is why I declined the replacement unit - because 1.1 may still not be available before the return window closes). It's also dependent on my organization's decision to test and support it though. All of my main concerns can be addressed without new hardware - but I need to wait until those things come out before buying again. Time will tell - but one thing is for sure. This tech is definitely not boring or before its time. It's just an early release, and early releases need some soak time to work out the kinks.
