The future is AI, the future is now. There are myriads of possible ways humans and machines can interact. It is the human machine interface that excites me as an occupational safety and health professional. Adopting the PtD (prevention through design) methodology we can ensure that a human centered approach is incorporated from the beginning to engineer out anticipated risk and injury to humans from automation to robotics to faulty data analysis. While PtD is typically thought of as an engineering methodology, I challenge OHS professionals to apply this methodology to more abstract ideas as we flow with the speed of tech and innovation. The Biden administration has published a document titled the AI Bill of Rights which is a framework for ensuring automated systems are developed with a focus on people. Further, the International Labor Organization has launched a new virtual hub that will coordinate the latest research on AI which will help shape its prevalence in the workplace and dictate the future of work. Exciting times indeed!!
