Two federal agencies are calling on Gov. Kay Ivey to address a “severe financial gap” between the state’s historically Black and predominantly white land grant universities. Land grant institutions are colleges built between 1862 and 1890 with grants from the federal government, which aimed to help working class Americans gain access to higher education. But for decades, states have substantially underfunded Black land grant colleges compared to their white counterparts, experts say. #AAMU #landgrants #alabamacolleges #collegefunding

A Jefferson County judge has ordered the #Birmingham towing company, Parking Enforcement Systems (PES), to provide documentation to the opposing counsel, in a case alleging predatory towing practices spanning over a decade. PES had repeatedly delayed submitting the requested information to Alabama Car Lawyer Mike Parrish on behalf of plaintiff Terry White, claiming it was irrelevant. Parrish argued the documents were essential to prove White’s case as representative of a larger group affected by PES. Judge Jim Hughey III, the fourth judge to preside over the case, ruled that PES and lot owner Robert Crook must submit agreements, policies, training documents, contracts, and records related to towing operations and compliance with city ordinances. The judge’s order aims to uncover any improper or illegal actions by PES and Crook, providing necessary evidence for the plaintiff’s claims. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eCNVW4am 📝: Hannah Gann 📸: Paul Beaudry

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in a case from Alabama, where delays in the unemployment system are under fire. Residents are challenging whether they need to wait for the state’s slow appeals process—averaging 752 days—before suing. “The issue becomes whether Petitioners are required to adjudicate their grievances with the very agency that they claim aggrieved them in the first place,” says law professor Maryam Stevenson. Alabama claims state sovereignty, while plaintiffs argue federal civil rights laws should take precedence. 🔗https://lnkd.in/eVDEU6vT 📝: Sarah Whites-Koditschek
