Potentially kill current aboveground vegetation but also expose new areas for vegetation turnover 3. Bioturbate soil layers 4. Eat earthworms and cut roots 5. Provide a source of organic matter ...and probably many more things besides. I kinda feel they could be the equivalent of mini underground beavers 🦫 At least on a localised scale.

Deposition (or burial under a glacier) corresponds approximately to one-dimensional (1D) compression, during which the horizontal effective stress increases in proportion to the effective overburden pressure. Clays may also become consolidated by desiccation (drying) on exposure to air, by vegetation or by freezing, where the effective stress is increased through a reduction in pore water pressure while the total stress remains constant.
