During my assignment in Maldives in 2006-07, I remember stepping into a completely new environment, having never travelled abroad before. The experience was a whirlwind of learning and adapting, surrounded by people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. With limited theoretical knowledge of defence diplomacy and foreign cooperation, this journey instilled in me the invaluable skills of building trust through transparency and accountability, identifying commonalities, and shaping a worldview while maintaining allegiance. It's about showing why alignment with you benefits both the individual and the organisation. In the business world today, I see a parallel. The potential for unique contributions is immense if organisations provide the time – perhaps a three to six-month gestation period – for individuals to adapt to their culture and environment. This period allows the growth mindset inherent in us to flourish, and drive the organisation forward with innovation and improvement. The key to this process is the soft skills of team building, stabilising relationships through shared understanding and cooperation and ensuring no one is left behind. Cohesion and bonding, both on and off work, are crucial. In an environment where everyone is interdependent, these skills naturally come into play, fostering a sense of unity and mutual support. Ultimately, it comes down to taking that leap of faith – believing that with time and support, individuals will rise to the challenge and deliver outstanding results.
