Do you remember a collage of portraits of Asian American victims in Times Square?   It is rare to see mainstream attention on the Asian American Victims - Listen to this episode of Tiger in the Room Podcast   Hannah Kang (Korean American- NY) interviews Jonathon Chang (Taiwanese-American - LA), the remarkable artist behind the poignant portraits of Asian American victims showcased in Times Square. These portraits, a stark contrast to the graphic news images, have helped humanize the victims and draw much-needed attention to their stories.   Jonathon's journey into activism is a testament to the emotional toll of confronting injustice. He opens up about the challenges of creating these portraits and the heart-wrenching process of studying each attack. It's a journey that's not only relatable but also inspiring.   Similarly, I created a timeline of attacks to educate others about the discrimination Asian Americans face. Posting DAILY about these violent incidents was incredibly difficult, and I had to stop due to recurring nightmares.   As Hanna and Jonathon discuss the diversity and DIVISIONS within the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, they highlight the struggles and the importance of unity. I find this sooooo relatable and the frustration is REAL.   🎙️ This episode shows how we can all contribute are talents, regardless of what they are. For me, it shows me I am not alone with my full-on commitment to create awareness with ridiculous commitment.   The early podcast with China Mac is equally compelling, highlighting the fight against hate that many of us feel compelled to join. Hip Hop changed my life. It introduced me to another historical perspective, political struggle, Black love, Black joy, Black resistance, Black excellence - hip-hop changed the way I thought about everything. Tupac was one of my first loves: to me, he will always be the poets' rapper and the ladies' favourite. He was both a conscious rapper and a gangster rapper and he helped (alongside legends like DeadPrez and Common Sense as well as a host of singer-songwriters such as Erykah Badu and Jill Scott) introduce me to the complexity of the struggle for black folk in America and showed me how it is both similar and different in the UK. Many people will think of Tupac for being a troublemaker - and not for being troubled. They will think of him as being a gangster and not a highly principled thought leader. They will also have him aligned with racial stereotypes - piecing together headlines and not the whole picture. If you know about Tu Pac or not, the docuseries 'Dear Mama' on Disney is a must-watch. We meet his famous-in-her-own-right mother the legendary Black Panther Afine Shakur and learn of her impact on the community, on her son and his later legacy. They were both incredible humans, full of love and a raging sense of justice. If you need to diversify your cannon - watch this. I don’t know who needs to hear this but here it goes. Black podcasters are extremely talented. Yes we do certain genres well: culture, dating, comedy. However we do other genres just as well: history, true crime, science and others. We also know how to curate content for other audiences as well. For instance, I can tell the story of childhood trauma that resonates with a predominantly white audience. Or I can switch it up and produce a story of a Native American high school girl’s soccer team. Or maybe I’ll write a script that shares how deep antisemitism ran in 1940s Japan. So yes we as black podcasters tell our stories a lot because for the longest time they were written for us, often times incorrectly and/or without proper context. But we have the depth to make other stories outside of black culture funny, relatable, heartbreaking or sad. And when we do tell black stories you probably relate to them more often than you think. So the next time you see the cover art and you see a black face, don’t just write it off as “this is black content, it doesn’t relate to me” but also don’t assume it’s in the genres you see us in often. Take a look at those show notes. Because to do that is just a pathway blocking your own growth. Besides we are amazing storytellers, you don’t want to miss out. #DoWithThatWhatYouWill #SeeYouAtWork

This is note from 2018, six years ago. I wrote "K-pop is also a product of the ideology of a 'service-oriented society' that defines modern South Korean society." ___ 1. I think K-pop reflects Anglo-American pop formally and J-pop emotionally, i.e. it borrowed its revenue model from Anglo-American pop and its operating model from Japanese idols, and it learned from the rise and fall of Japanese idols and made exemplary and ethical standards an absolute value, which made it a faithful model for the service industry. 2. For reference, Korea is a society that has developed an unusually high number of people-based service industries among self-employment since the IMF in the 90s, and within this structure, Korean society has conceptualized service as "getting down on the floor to serve." This concept has had a huge impact not only on the restaurant industry, but also on politics, society, and culture as a whole, and it is natural to consider idols as being in the service industry. (Especially apartments in Korea are the sum total of these services) 3. To go a bit further, unless we change this legacy of Korean society, it will be difficult to see the emergence of celebrities with different identities (= subversion of the heterosexist/patriarchal value system) as well as the innovation of the political system. We need to rethink our identity not as a person who needs to be served (= I am a consumer) but as a person who is suspicious of service (= I am a citizen). I think this is what the education in this era should aim for. (This implies a different meaning and attitude from "enlightenment") 4. Anyway, recently(*as of 2018), the attitude of K-POP idols has become a hot topic in Western media due to the achievements of BTS, and I think this is an issue that needs to be looked into more deeply. I am very uncomfortable with the cute behavior of idols, especially girl group members, and their "pretty" smiles all the time. I also can't get used to the "atmosphere" in which many people, regardless of gender, take this for granted. 5. Coming back to square one, I think the current dazzling (!) success of K-POP is the result of a combination of the emotional specificity of Korean society and environmental factors that have changed the revenue structure and promotion channels of music globally. But can we call it exemplary? I get a little complicated. * Notes from June 2018.
