"I only want to go in-house". I've been speaking with several associates who feel burned out and fed up with billing 2000+ hours. They've become the "go-to" associate in their group while others are barely hitting target. While these associates enjoy the work, they're looking for more control over their schedules and time. To them, going in-house appears to be the only option. It's not. Here are 3 things to consider if you find yourself in this position: 1) In-house lawyers can work long hours too. Going in-house might not solve work load the problem you're looking to fix. 2) There are many lawyers who pivot in-house, then realize they miss the complexity and pace of private practice. 3) If you enjoy your work, but want better autonomy over your time, making a lateral move – and re-establishing yourself within a new firm/group with better boundaries – might be the answer you're looking for. For some, going in-house is the best next step in their career, but for others making a lateral move to another firm might actually be the fix.

There was a time when I faced interviewees who said that they didn’t have the skills required for the jobs they applied for. I replied then that I wasn’t interested in what they don’t know, but more in what they wanted to learn. Which brings me to 4 types of employees: 1. The Able and Willing: those who readily take up new challenges and new learning opportunities. They go far, and fast track. 2. The Able and Unwilling: those with potential who need help to find their WHY, to unlock their full potential. 3. The Unable and Willing: diamonds in the rough. Find them, polish them and let them shine for you. 4. The Unable and Unwilling: the drifters and deadwood who need disciplined turnaround support. Or an exit plan. Do you see them in the office? More importantly, who do you see in the mirror? 😜 30/1

WHEN DID YOU KNOW? We were all doing what we do now when we were 10 years old. Kind of… Long before reading resumes, interviewing interns, production prospects, and skilled tradespeople, there was GI Joe. This is what a lobby full of applicants looked like when I was in 4th grade- a red, plastic collector case. Some of the first teams I put together were for backyard rescue missions. Each Joe had a file card with their skill set, personality profile, pay grade, and hobbies. My younger brother and I would read about each action figure and then decide if they were a good fit for the job. A soldier dressed in arctic gear rarely was sent to the desert. However, if they could drive a dune buggy or hack into a Cobra mainframe it was a real plus. Now and then, colleagues and I will chat about when we knew the type of work we wanted to do. Engineers will talk about a remote control car they modified in the 5th grade. I have met a few electricians too, that fixed a toaster during summer break or programmed a garage door opener. It is important that we all look back at when we started down our career path. Reconnecting with what makes our craft satisfying will bring back memories. Many probably started towards the end of elementary school. Be proud of your career and remember where you come from. Job satisfaction is a true blessing. And knowing is half the battle!

🍂With the end of summer, also marked another end, that of my time at DEFRA. It's been one of those contracts that will really stay with me. Great people, great ideas, great passion, great knowledge. I think too often people assume contractors come in and go without a thought of legacy, both what will they leave but also take away. Me, myself always find prising myself away, difficult. That Mary Poppins-esq departure is always emotional, and DEFRA is no different. The end of a two year spell where I've learnt as much I've contributed, and grown with them, not watched from the sidelines. My manager's parting words were "you make people feel secure." And honestly, that means a lot. Everyone can lead, but not everyone does so with kindess at their heart and seeing people for what they are - individuals. So here's to moving forwards, with a renewed reminder of the importance of people first 🤍 #contractor #contracting #programmemanagement

This provides some insight on what kind of person I am when people hire me. I feel that this is pretty accurate and those who have had me before as a co-worker would agree. Here's the link to the quiz if you're curious about what your result is. https://lnkd.in/gjyXVp76
