Each year, The Economist publishes a ranking of the cities with the best living conditions. In 2024, the Liveability Index saw slight improvements, despite geopolitical conflicts, civil unrest and housing crises. This is partly due to advances in healthcare and education in a number of cities in developing markets. As the following chart shows, Vienna has been crowned as the world’s most liveable city, having secured an impressive score of 98.4 points. The Austrian capital has come first three years in a row thanks to its high scores in the categories of stability, infrastructure, education and healthcare. The Danish capital of Copenhagen and the Swiss city of Zurich are the next two cities to round off the podium. Although both of the Australian cities of Sydney and Melbourne and Canada’s Vancouver remain in the top ten, all three cities have seen their infrastructure scores drop due to their respective housing crises. For this reason, Toronto in Canada fell to rank 12 in 2024. https://lnkd.in/gq4EwnwT

San Francisco, with a Cost of Living Index (COLI) of 112.8, tops the list in The Americas and is fourth globally. This index uses New York City's cost of living as the baseline at 100. Housing costs make up about 30% of living expenses for an international professional. Housing costs are a pivotal factor in all 3 most expensive cities high cost of living. 🏢 UK: Productivity in the UK's second-tier cities lags behind 🌃 - In a recent report, the National Infrastructure Commission suggested that the major English cities outside of London suffer from a serious productivity shortfall, with productivity levels below the average. 9 of the second-tier cities have productivity lower than the UK average (excluding London). - A possible explanation is that London is weakening other cities by its dominance: It is starving them of fund, talent, and so on. But a comparison with France raises some doubts over that. As with London, Paris is highly productive. But with Paris removed from the national average, 10 out of the 15 largest French cities have productivity higher than the national. - The UK does have another region of very strong productivity performance: the super-region, the Greater South East. However, this super-regions tends to not have large cities. On that basis, the low productivity of the UK's second-tier cities is a consequence of high-growth economic activity being skewed towards the Greater South East. - UK productivity is focused on the towns and small cities around London with high incomes per head and good transport links to the capital, leaving the great cities of the Midlands, the North and the Devolved Nations ''starved'' of talents, of funds, of high growth companies, which leads to lower-than average productivity levels.
