This is an exciting development I didn't expect, and it's definitely interesting creative thinking by the route planning team. Some of it is a major departure from the standard business plan: as few as 1 flight per week, entirely outside the west coast, and using a package vacation company partner to reduce a bunch of the risk. I wonder how their premium-heavy cabin arrangement will play with leisure tourists who normally skew to the cheaper options? More destinations for BOI and SAN is notable; the latter must be getting close to full hub status. Also notable is growing California through the middle: SMF and FAT. The former gets long haul with a product WN can't match, the latter gets a Mexican destination WN doesn't serve.

TRAIN TO THE BAROSSA In 2014, I went to the World Cup in Brazil to support Australia and was fortunate to see one of the best goals of the World Cup by Tim Cahill against the Netherlands. On our return trip to Australia, we went to San Francisco and went on the Napa Valley Wine Train. Now, to get onto the Napa Valley Wine Train, the quickest way is to drive for approximately an hour to connect with the Napa Valley Wine Train. When I returned to Australia, a colleague and I started to re-explore the opportunity to have the Barossa Regional Wine Train and developed the attached concept in more detail in 2016. What excited me was being involved in the last stage of the Adelaide Convention Centre Development; I could imagine some 3000 delegates walking out of the convention centre, getting on a Train that would take them to one of the most highly prized wine regions in the world, without having to drive: in just under 90 mins —enhancing the whole experience. There are very few places in the world that could offer this. Further, this would also align with the projected population growth /HOUSING demand and enable the expansion of rail services to Nuriootpa, servicing the excellent tourism opportunity and providing an expanded rail passenger service.  For various reasons, we haven't embraced rail. Is it time to embrace rail? With Gather Round being such a success and AFL football now going to the Barossa, imagine going there by train. I also plan to go to football at Mt Barker by train one day. Dreams are great and become even more astounding when they become reality. #rail #tourism #infrastructure #housing

THE NEXT STAGE … The #TourdeFrance. The world’s top cycle race and 2024 marks the 111th edition. So what’s it about? A lot of blokes in Lycra biking it around #France? Well, the Lycra bit is true and yes, France plays a key role but there’s a lot more going on. The race has 21 stages covering approximately 3,500 kilometres (that’s 2,200 miles in old money) through the Pyrenees and the Alps. A gruelling race! Like the markets, #LeTour is always #changing, always challenging, always evolving. The route changes each year and although ‘de France’ is a clue where it’s heading, it starts in different countries. This year it started in Florence, #Italy and will finish in Nice, France. For the first time, the race will not finish in Paris due to preparations for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Why am I telling you this? Well, just like the Tour de France, economic and market cycles have different starting points and no two routes are the same. Think about it. How did we get here? A global pandemic, wars, geopolitical tensions all over the place, an on/off recession, a 44-day Prime Minister, sticky inflation, high interest rates and a #GeneralElection. As exhausting for #investors as those 21 stages and 3,500 kilometres for #cyclists. But investors or cyclists, you don’t have to win every stage. A #yellowjersey is great but keep your eye on the long-term goal. This year Mark Cavendish won stage five, his 35th stage victory at the Tour de France, breaking the record of 34 wins by Eddy Merckx. But in 1990, three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond won the Tour without winning a single stage. So, what next? Moving to the next stage, the goal for cyclists and investors is the same: be ready; adjust when necessary; maintain the long view. Want to know more? Perhaps a café au lait? A tête-à-tête?
