Is the Shiloh Shepherd a Purebred? Alaska Dog Works has been getting a lot of questions lately about the Shiloh Shepherd. Is it a purebred? No. It is a cross breed recognized since the early 1990s. Is it recognized by the American Kennel Club? No, but it is recognized any the American Rare Breed Association. Why breed dogs that are not purebreds? The American Kennel’s mission to to breed and promote responsible breedings that uphold to THEIR standards. While the AKC is the most recognizable organization for dog breeds, it does not mean they are the only one. What is a purpose bred dog? As far back as 20,000 years ago humans have been breeding dogs for a purpose. Some are crossed with other breeds to improve performance, function, health, etc. Others are bred just to be our companions.
