A visionary who demonstrated timeless leadership and integrity with the sole purpose of creating a safer world- that’s how I would describe Dr. Ronald Stewart.
He lived an outstanding life filled with adventure- the time I spent with him over breakfast, coffee, texts, and calls was always cherished. He made history and left a lasting legacy that would change the world in creating the field of Emergency Medicine. No matter how robust and glamorous his life work was- he had this profound way of empowering people to see it as attainable.
As a First Nations woman, the world is not set up in a way to feel safe to dream let alone to hold bold ambitions and pursue enormous goals. Internally, where I didn’t have confidence- Dr. Ron filled that gap with inspiration through his words and tireless truly meaningful connection. Where I didn’t see a way forward, he shared time and created space to build visions.
He spoke life into me and reminded me of what he seen in me- constantly. He defined innovation, grit, leadership, and always held First Nations (especially youth) in high regard. Out of his many creations, inventions, and achievements, I truly believe the leadership he developed within those he connected with was his greatest impact on the world. He set the stage for us in so many ways that I wish I had the chance to tell him. I’m certain I’ve gained another angel. I will continue to carry his teachings and aspire to walk in the light he created for us.
To his family and loved ones- paqsitpi meskeyi/I am so sorry for your loss. His work continues through us- for that I am so grateful.

Senior Executive Director
Emergency Health Services Branch
Nova Scotia Dept of Health and Wellness
This picture was shared with me yesterday . I like it ... to me this is an image of a tenacious leader who truly put service above self .. an example to us all
A tragic personal event back in 1982 set the stage for me wanting to pursue Paramedicine , long before it was ever referred to in this manner here in Nova Scotia ..this of course was only amplified by watching the show “ Emergency” ( if you know you know) of which Dr. Stewart was involved advising on.. what kept me in this line of service was having the opportunity to speak and learn with people like Dr. Stewart who was such a solid promoter, supporter and ambassador of Paramedicine and the development of an organized , modern and impactful Emergency Health Services system here in Nova Scotia
This man has positively influenced and definitely saved countless lives with his vision , mission and values on driving improvements in Emergency Care
Dr. Stewart passed yesterday at the age of 82.. his legacy is long and deep and we will always remember and celebrate his passion, focus, kindness and tenacity for his patients , his colleagues , his Province and his community
Thanks for who you are what what you did Doc ..
it all mattered

🚨 What to Do If a Crew Member Falls Ill Onboard?
Unlike on land, where medical care is readily accessible, life at sea presents unique challenges when a crew member falls ill. With no doctor on board and often far from shore, accessing medical assistance can be difficult.
Learn more about how vessels manage health emergencies and what steps can be taken to ensure the well-being of the crew in these situations. 🌊⚓

Lesson of the Day from Western North Carolina
Federal and State emergency response should have a public-private liaison officer that empowers operations of local community volunteers through resources and coordination.
Reality:
1. Government wants to control response in order to streamline situational awareness, accountability, and coordination. Natural tendency.
2. Government response is critical and the only way to really recover at scale.
3. The increasing severe impact of extreme weather events across zip codes and state lines, means that unaffiliated first responders will be stepping in with greater frequency. Historically, the #CajunNavy is the most publicized example. Now we have the what I am calling #AppalachianAirforce - private helicopters running evacuation, home health checks, and supply deliveries.
The new REALITY:
The disaster medicine truism is all immediate response is local has never been more true. SO, there needs to be a better mechanism to empower highly motivated, skilled, and motivated volunteers who have no official organizational affiliation.
