Remembering Senator Joe Lieberman today, who passed away earlier this week. Throughout his time in the U.S. Senate, Senator Lieberman was a tireless champion and vocal advocate for protections of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. As we honor his memory, we are continuing to carry on the work to protect the Arctic Refuge, and we remain grateful for his leadership. "As I have said every time I have come to the floor to speak about the Arctic Refuge, the mark of greatness in a generation lies not just in what it builds for itself, but also in what it preserves for the generations to come." - Sen. Joe Lieberman, March 14 2012

While developing POLLi's common milkweed identification algorithm, we defined plots using stakes and strings to delineate an area that enabled us to compare the accuracy of the object detection model we developed with manual counts performed by researchers from Monarch Joint Venture, Bayer, and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). We first flew over the area and collected data. Then, two researchers went into each plot and individually counted the milkweed within the plot. They each marked the individual milkweeds with small flags, and when they were complete, they compared their counts. It was a way of double-checking the counts' accuracy and comparing human accuracy to the object detection model. While we worked, a photographer from National Geographic Magazine captured photos and documented the process. An article in National Geographic's January 2024 issue about the continent-wide efforts to help the monarch contains a photo of some researchers who participated that day. Check out the story at https://lnkd.in/gpfRkm78. Or pick up a copy. The photos are amazing, and the story is fantastic. #Botlink #Radix #Polli #SimpleBusinessAutomation #Pollinators

Our documentary "The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness" allowed audiences to connect with the Arctic's untamed wilderness and its diverse wildlife. It showcased the urgency of preserving this unique ecosystem and respecting the cultural heritage of Alaska Natives. 💙 Together with the movie, we launched an action campaign, where anyone could join! Every voice counted; millions of letters were delivered focusing on protecting the Arctic. ⏩ Fast-forward to today: The Biden administration has taken significant steps to protect the Arctic. They recently cancelled Trump-era oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and proposed protections for the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska. These decisions are a testament to the power of public awareness and advocacy. 💪 "The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness" has its part in mobilizing public opinion and inspiring action. This is a reminder that we all have the ability to drive positive change, whether through art, advocacy, or simply by raising our voices for causes that matter. 🌎💙 🎬 Haven’t watched the documentary yet? Here is something 100% worth your time! 'Only a few days left for public comment; comment period closes Jun 24, 2024 11:59 PM Mountain Time. Public comment has stopped similar projects in the past. 1. Click the link in Nat Hab's post below. 2. Here are important points to make: * Request that the NPS reject the proposed easements for the Johnson Tract * Ask that in-depth environmental and wildlife impact assessments be conducted prior to any continued permitting. * Insist that the resource analyses evaluate and address how the proposed easements will impact: ** Critical bear denning habitat (based on recent collared-bear research in the area—see the map below that illustrates the movement of collared bears in the area in and around the Johnson Tract and proposed easements) **Vital bear feeding and mating habitat on and near the coast **Essential travel corridors for bears and other wildlife * Request that any eastern easements proposed for the Johnson River Valley be prevented due to irreversible impacts to pristine wetlands.

We're very proud to have helped fund the second Meeting of the Latin American Ranger Federation of Park Rangers in Cusco Peru! Words from The International Ranger Federation: After a week of intense work, on Sunday 12th of May took place the closing of the Second Meeting of the Latin American Ranger Federation (FLG) supported by the International Ranger Federation IRF). The Meeting was held at the CONAFOVICER facilities in Cusco, Peru and brought together 46 rangers from 10 Latin American countries. During the Meeting, the work of the ranger associations and unions that integrate the FLG was presented, as well as their achievements, their challenges, and experiences and sharing of lessons learned. Subsequently, the next steps were identified to legally formalize FLG as a Regional Federation, elections for the new board of FLG, a 5-year roadmap was developed and a declaration was drawn up which expresses the voice of the rangers in the Latin American region. The result of holding in-person ranger meeting is invaluable, as not only are good practices shared in favor of conservation, but the voice and identity of the profession is also strengthened by the regional ranger associations. Only through a strengthened, supported and resourced ranger workforce can be possible to achieve ambitious global conservation goals, such as Target 3 (30x30) of the Convention on Biological Diversity. 📷 @chrisgalliers #SinGuardaparquesNohayConservación #rangersfor30x30 #westandwithworldrangers #forcefornature #conservationevolved #wildliferangers #wildlifehero #wildlifeconservation
