Site Management (Superintendent, General Foremen and Foremen) influence millions of dollars of construction a year. They must ensure that all resources are being used efficiently with minimal waste. Yet often, they receive very little in the way of training on how to plan and schedule field activities.

"See something, say something" has become a common phrase on construction sites but how do we expect our trades to communicate an issue? If you are relying on verbal communication or handwritten forms, then best case, the information is slow to get to you, or worse it never gets to the right person. What skill sets would a superintendent need to control circumstances on a job site? 1. Keep a to-do list: Have a list of tasks they want to do and complete. To keep organized and focused on completing project goals. 2. They should make, optimize, and utilize their own schedule: Have a personalized plan for allocating their time during and outside of work. 3. Be organized: Effectively managing their resources; whether it’s time, effort, information, materials, jobsite space, etc. 4. Use technology: Utilize the latest tools and software to address challenges and find solutions. These are skills a construction companies should look for in their current or future hires at superintendent. A superintendent with these skills would position themselves everyday to take massive, yet organized action. That’s why developing these skill sets can’t be left to chance. Not only should a superintendent be seeking continuous education through books, courses, and mentorship. Or maintaining a consistent focus towards self-development. Construction companies should be making sure these men and women have the proper tools to do so. Continual training should not only be suggested but a requirement that is provided. Project management platforms such as Procore Technologies should be implemented so superintendents are organizing and updating project information in real time. That way they don’t have to update it on a later date or carry their work home with them. A good superintendent commands and controls circumstances. Old carpenter saying, " Measure twice - cut once." I have worked in quality assurance for more than 50 years, Owns Corning Glass - picture tube glass inspector, Essex Wire - wire inspector, City of Houston - construction inspector and utilities inspector, A & D Inspections (self employed) - quality assurance inspector and accessibility consultant. During those fifty years, the most important lesson I learned was, the cost of a project is much less when control is in place and implemented. A & D Inspections offers "no cost" seminars for TAS and ADA regulations to municipalities. One of the worst sayings I hear on projects is "I think", when the people working on a project are not certain, get the correct answer. A little delay in getting a project correct is better and cheaper than making corrections at the end of the project.

As an Engineer, I quickly learnt that working in construction is different to every other industry. Here are the 3 biggest reasons why: 1. Unlike other industries, everyone is not on the same team: There are A LOT of parties involved in the delivery of a single project (Contractors, subcontractors, consultants and sub-consultants, etc). Each party has its own company-led motivations and goals, and It's really, really challenging to align them. 2. It's HARD to create a routine because change is constant: Very few work environments are as dynamic as a construction site. The challenges, technical skills needed, and site logistics often change multiple times per day :exploding_head: 3. Teams are temporary (so mistakes get repeated): Each project brings together a new team of people; which unavoidably moves you back down the learning curve :face_palm: All of these challenges seem pretty big, but once you learn to navigate them, you get: - Everyone on the same page - Consistent routines - Continuous improvement between projects That kinda looks like a perfect project... A Project Manager or Construction Manager fail to maintain safe system of work on-site would be sent home immediately…! Site Engineers, Supervisors, lead men are supported by Senior site managers to ignore safety protocols and safe system of work at sites , senior managers influencing safety department to close their eyes on safety violations. Play your part as a safety practitioner, report , record all safety violations at your workplace and ensure the compliance by using STOP work authority. Silence is a crime and you will regret if something goes wrong..! Simple 💥 If you saw a mistake correct that mistake otherwise it will become your mistake ☝️🎯

How can site supervisirs manage their time effectively ? All projects are planned to follow a programme of works. This starts with the planning, designing preparations and finally the site execution team. This is where the site supervisors should prove to be the strongest link and effective. Managing supervision time effectively is a balancing act between the visible activities and behind the scenes but essential duties. If its a construction site, the works progress is observed by all but what makes this possible is the behind the scenes input of the supervisor, which includes overseeing day to day operations, ensuring proper flow of materials, full utilization of personel and labour, equipment and machinery. Conduct inspection and assessment of all situations, importantly of security and safe implementation of the project, write reports and keep records. Being the interlink between the technical and execution teams he has to have good understanding of the companies policies and procedures and divide his time in effectively achieving this. A good leader should also be able how and where to give instructions and which areas are possible to delegate and those that cannot be delegated
