Managing supply purchasing across multiple dental offices can be challenging, but with the right systems in place, it can be streamlined and efficient. Here are key strategies to consider: 1. **Streamlined Ordering**: Implement centralized systems to standardize and simplify the ordering process across all locations. 2. **Vendor Consolidation**: Work to consolidate vendors to negotiate better pricing, reduce complexity, and improve consistency in supplies. 3. **Budget Oversight**: Establish clear budgetary controls and reporting mechanisms to monitor spending, identify savings opportunities, and maintain financial discipline. By focusing on these areas, you can optimize your supply chain management, reduce costs, and ensure that each office is well-stocked and running smoothly.

I found this quote interesting and eye opening, This is from the book ( PROFIT FROM PROCUREMENT Adding 30% to your Bottom Line by Breaking Down Silos: “Being customer focused, whether in Procurement or elsewhere, is not a new concept. It is one those elements that when you get it right, everything else flows from it. In the end we all exist to serve our customers, whoever they are. If we don’t have customers- people who be fenefit from our work and services- we won’t be around for very long. They are the ones who need to be kept satisfied as much as possible. But this basic concept is so often overlooked, and especially in Procurement. How many times have you looked at your Procurement function and wondered who they are serving, and how happy those people are with what Procurement is doing ?”

With continued investment in developing supply chains, we have seen an uplift in the demand for Inventory Managers. Economic pressures are prompting businesses to optimise inventory holding, leading to a greater focus on data accuracy. Many organizations are enhancing their ERP systems and implementing new forecasting tools to boost competitiveness, visibility, and ultimately lead to a reduction in their working capital. Since January 2024, we have seen active numbers of Inventory Managers drop from 28% to 23% along with the average remuneration package increasing from $145,955 to $150,398 across NSW. With only 4% of Inventory Managers immediately available, contracting positions will remain difficult to recruit for. I have included a full job profile report below for July 2024.

A huge congratulations to James Howes at Humber & North Yorkshire Procurement Collaborative who won the FUTURE LEADER award at the Procurement Conference. Thank you to SR Supply Chain Consultants Ltd for sponsoring the award. James is a Sourcing and Contracts Officer at Northern Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG). NLAG are merging their procurement teams with Hull University Teaching Hospitals and York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals. As part of the transitions process there is a lot of work underway to harmonise policies and processes, standardise procurement systems and bring the teams together under a single structure. Due to the financial pressures of the three trusts, the executive teams are keen to see financial benefits delivered through collaboration as quickly as possible. A savings project was identified to standardise key consumables across the three trusts, these included; stationery, office furniture and cleaning consumables. James volunteered to take this project forward on behalf of the three trusts. The first stage of the project was to identify all of the items purchased across the three trusts to build a baseline. This required collation of data from NHS Supply Chain, direct purchase order and accounts payable data from each Trust and any procurement card expenditure. The outcome of the project was a standardised product list across the three trusts which makes the most of our buying power, a number of changes to products including some which were in the contentious category and savings of £1.3m. More importantly this project has shown that the three trusts can deliver more collaboratively and has highlighted the great work Procurement can do.
