The possibility of a SHEIN IPO has been on the table for a long time. However, it now looks like it is moving closer with the company having filed confidential paperwork for an offering on the London Stock Exchange. I am often asked about Shein’s reputation and the impact it will have on an IPO. The honest answer is that Shein is a company with two reputations: a consumer one and a corporate one. For all the negativity around Shein, the consumer reputation is in a reasonable place. Yes, some shoppers have doubts about Shein’s operations but most overlook these because of the cheap prices and quick fashion fixes. The same thing applies to quality where Shein is not always that highly rated – it’s a trade-off many are willing to make in exchange for not having to pay much for garments. This reasonably balanced value proposition is why Shein has grown strongly. The corporate reputation is a different animal. Shein has not convinced many politicians and trade groups over its business practices. And while these folks do not buy products directly, they can make life difficult for Shein in terms of policies and regulations. Indeed, a UK-based human rights group is already calling on the Financial Conduct Authority to refuse the application to list. As a public company this matters more than ever and means corporate reputation will become far more critical than it has been in the past. Quick, cheap and not what it seems. Shoppers can have everything they want, and have it for dirt cheap. That's the vision fast fashion brand Shein has sold, and many have bought so much so that the company has filed for an IPO. A retail behemoth, the company is eyeing a $90 billion valuation though that number is up for debate. Shein shoppers usually have the same kind of mindset...“I like the prices, they’re very reasonable. They won’t price-gouge you." While no one can be faulted for looking for a bargain, the bigger concern for shoppers is where the corners are being cut. While it's won fans, it hasn't won over regulators. Shein's IPO comes with plenty of question marks and questionables. Lawmakers, human rights groups, and consumers have criticized everything from the company’s supply chain and working conditions to its copycat designs originating from independent artists. Shein hasn't exactly been an open book either since it's pretty much stuck to its highly secretive approach. Shein still has more work to do before it can win the trust of regulators. Beyond its myriad issues, its CEO remains a mysterious figure who doesn’t give interviews or speak publicly about the company. Is the Shein London Stock Exchange listing inevitable? If so, what do we do? Have you heard of Shareholder Activism? Many of you in my network are gradually expressing more and more horror about the "potential" listing of Shein in the UK. A couple of weeks ago papers were filed and so the wheels have been set in motion. As we know Shein is a real and present threat to the world's ecosystems and to to labour forces' welfare. The overproduction and overconsumption created is a text book example of the pinnacle (or depths) of the extractive linear economy. We simply can't support the volume and live within planetary boundaries. While we make sustainability gains in the fashion industry, in regulation, in materials, in customer understanding - Shein's impact is a wrecking ball in terms of the true impact of carbon reductions, labour standards, design IP, chemicals usage - the list goes on. What do we do? Do we wait, fuming, for the inevitable? Or do we make a plan? Have you heard of Shareholder Activism? The essence is, if you own 1 share (you only need 1), you have a voice because you are a shareholder. You can attend the AGM, you can ask questions. I have a horrible feeling that the IPO is inevitable (I really, really hope it isn't). If it comes to pass this Autumn, I think some Shareholder Activism is required. This could apparently be one of the largest US listings in the past decade. JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs are advising on this significant move for the retailer, which gained massive popularity during the pandemic. Backed by heavyweights like Mubadala, Sequoia China, and General Atlantic, Shein was valued at $100bn in 2022 – outshining even Zara and H&M combined, reported by Forbes. But hey, the valuation rollercoaster hit a dip this year, landing at $64bn, thanks to interest rate hikes and market uncertainties. Still, don't count Shein out – recent projections hint at a colossal revenue leap from $22.7bn in 2022 to a jaw-dropping $58.5bn by 2025! Now, here's the tea: If all aligns in the fashion cosmos, you could subscribe to the IPO as soon as 2024. But wait, Shein's not just donning roses; it's also handling thorns. The retailer's faced heat for alleged use of forced labor in China's Xinjiang region. State attorneys are watching closely, with CNBC reporting 16 of them urging the SEC to tap the brakes until Shein can prove that it doesn’t use forced labor.
