Trust & high clear communication go together for collaboration. Low communication brings unclarity and there for does not enhance trust. When working on trustbuilding there will be miscommunication/misunderstanding, with our human nature it's easy to assume nefarious intentions, because our survival instinct will want to keep us safe and will go to fight/flight/freeze behaviour for things that 'seem' dangerous in our primal brain. Hence the ability to be compassionate and forgiving is a skill that is necessary for trust building in any kind of collaboration. Creating clarity dissipates distrust and therefor is the foundation for trustbuilding, which is not equal to short term gains but . START NICE: be willing to cooperate and show it to your partner from the very beginning. RETALIATE: respond in kind to unfriendly action from your partner so that you're not seen as pushover that can be preyed upon. BE FORGIVING: from time to time break the retaliation chain with friendly response to show your readiness for renewed cooperation - otherwise you and your partner might spiral down to a scenario worse off for both of you. BE CLEAR: don't let haphazard unfriendly actions spoil your consistent communication strategy - otherwise uncertainty might build permanent distrust in your partner. These four principles form the cornerstone of 'generous tit for tat' game strategy - the most successful out of tens strategies directed against one another in pivotal computer experiments on 'Prisoner's Dillema' by Robert Axelrod (brilliantly presented in Derek Muller's recent #Veritasium episode). Yes, it's true that locally (i.e. with limited and KNOWN number of interactions between partners) other strategies might have the upper hand. But in a never-ending non-zero sum interaction enviroment (like international business!) the 'generous tit for tat' beats all other (more complicated; more naive and mild; more aggressive) strategies.

The research shared via this video demonstrated how when you approach the world with trust (and are also not overly trusting) you will win in the end against those who try to take advantage of you or are not giving. It doesn't say to be overly trusting, but rather I'd equate it to "giving people the benefit of the doubt". We need more of this type of thinking in business, rather than zero-sum thinking. #betterbizculture
