21 Ways In 21 Days - #2/21 "Origin stories matter." From origin stories we build our big belonging stories, and they help us make sense of who we are now, and how we got here. Australia’s National Day has an origin story like all other countries. As we know, not everyone is on the same page when it comes to the feelings and approaches to the day, and its origin stories. This post is not about setting the record straight on the origin story. It is more about leaning into origin stories more openly for conversation, rather than getting stuck in a culture war it. A critical point for conversation is whether the origin story being put forward is big enough for us to build our collective belonging? Is the story big enough to handle celebration of achievements and commemoration of losses? Is the story big enough to keep us striving for better belonging in this land together. Does the story encompass us here together as the oldest living cultures on earth and every living culture on earth? My encouragement to you, is that one of the ways to be more open and flexible in the conversations about January 26 is to lean into the question, “How did Australia get its National Day?” Then try a follow up question for conversation: “Is the story big enough? Coming up next: Why are some of us so hyped about January 26th?

The first of the 21 Ways In 21 Days. Understanding our purpose for how we navigate the National Day helps keep us focused on serving this and future generations. For some of us, purpose is clear, but for others, it is not. This way of asking purpose of the National Day question can provide a basis to affirm or challenge our feelings and approaches. I encourage you to focus on generating conversations and be more open and flexible. Be encouraged and encourage others.

21 Ways In 21 Days - #1/21 Ask the question: What is the purpose of a National Day? National Days are days set aside to remember something special. Usually, it’s an anniversary of something significant that the nation wants its citizens to actively keep remembering because it relates to belonging. When we investigate National Days for other countries, we notice similar feelings and approaches to the day as we have in Australia. Some of us see it as a wonderful moment of national patriotism. Some express hyper-nationalism. Some of us see it as a chance to express discontent and rejection of what this day stands for. Some of us see it as a celebration of survival and resistance. Also, for some of us none of these approaches and feelings matter, and it’s just a holiday. National Days ignite reflection questions like, who are we, how did we get here, and why does that story matter? Our challenge, and my encouragement, is to generate genuine conversations about our National Day that allow us to listen and learn from each other. “What is the purpose of our National Day?” Coming up next: How did Australia get its National Day? Is the story big enough?

A powerful lesson indeed!
A powerful lesson for all of us in this brilliant video from the National Down Syndrome Society We all make assumptions about people; at its worst we go to war, terrorise or abuse people whose identities or cultures we profess not to understand But the question is: Have we given them a chance? Our Global Village Programme aims to engage every member of every community around the world in taking action to help make the world a better place… and what better starting point than looking at how we treat each other? ❤️Watch this video and share across your network because over the weekend .. a tiny ripple of insight could turn into a Tsunami of tolerance and understanding ❤️❤️❤️ 🌎 And the world needs that right now 🌎 Sign up for the Global Village newsletter which sets out the roadmap for a better world https://lnkd.in/eAavUy6k

Today marks the start of National Essential Tremor awareness month. Some of you may be wondering, what is that? There are an estimated 1 million people in the UK who have ET and an estimated 10 million in the US alone. It's considered to be the most common neurological movement disorder, potentially 8-10 times more common than Parkinson's disease. Yet surprisingly not many people have heard of it. Essential tremor is a chronic condition characterised by involuntary, rhythmic tremor of a body part, most typically the hands and arms. Essential tremor is considered a slow progressive disorder and, in some people, may eventually involve the head, voice, tongue (with associated dysarthria), legs, and trunk. However, in many people, the disorder may be relatively non-progressive. The tremor may be mild throughout life. I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones (so far). I can remember displaying symptoms as far back as my early teens, but thankfully compared to many my symptoms have been mild and consistently so. Even so I've become a master at masking them, as professionally, because of the lack of awareness people have about ET, often assumptions are made based on what they see. My tremor is predominantly confined to my hands, my left more than my right. Good day or bad, I compensate by avoiding doing certain things in front of others. Cups and saucers are a definite no no........a juggling act to behold!! I can and do make a joke out of it, yes Shaky McShakerson is a name often used light-heartedly by my family to describe me. Work wise however sometimes its hard not to feel judged and to not feel the need explain to others about my ET. More often than not they've never heard of it. This post is just to raise awareness about ET and absolutely not for people to feel sorry for me. My ask is simply for you to find out a bit more about it, as its more than likely that you know/work with someone who has it.
March is National Essential Tremor Awareness Month and our 2024 theme is "Let's Take the Mystery Out of ET." Learn about ways to get involved by visiting our awareness page online. https://lnkd.in/dqxq-gy #ETAwareness2024
