Victoria’s nurses and midwives have unexpectedly rejected a proposed pay increase from the Allan government, leaving union leaders surprised after they had previously reached an agreement. If I had to assume, I would say that most nurses chose to become nurses because they felt a calling to want to change lives, save lives, and help people in their most desperate of times. We skip lunches, work overtime, miss holidays, and rarely get bathroom breaks – all in the hope that at the end of the day, a patient remembers us as someone who made them feel better.   In nursing school, we dreamt of all the patients that we were going to help and the feeling of satisfaction when you feel like a good nurse. But what about the part that wasn’t talked about?   When you give everything you have to a patient who didn’t make it? The soul-crushing feeling of talking to a family member feels like you let them down. Could you have done something different to change the outcome?   If a different nurse was taking care of them, could they have done something different? Did you offer the family enough support? Want to know one of the best pieces of advice I ever received about #nursing and #healthcare leadership? Here it is: Don't ask your staff to do something you would not do yourself. That's it. It's that simple. If you never work overtime, don't ask or expect staff #nurses to do it. If you don't help others, don't ask staff to spend time helping each other. If you show up late or call off often, don't expect staff to be there and dedicated to their work. If you know the nurses are drowning with heavy assignments, but you stay in your office all day and don't lend a hand - get used to turnover, staff burnout, and unhappy workers in your department. Nursing leadership is challenging. You don't have to be perfect. The more I connect with leadership contacts in the long term care space, the more I’m learning how prevalent the use of “gig” healthcare workers as 1099 is. What’s even more alarming is that it doesn’t seem to be a concern for some(yet), while other larger healthcare systems are starting to figure out the potential for increased risk of legal and liability woes. The “co-employer” risk that organizations need to be aware of, where said organization can be held liable for the actions of these “gig” workers they are managing, ranging from medical errors to failing to pay overtime wages. Wage and Hour Division is a great resource to nursing professionals if you believe you are not being treated properly. If you use a PRN app for work and are not receiving any overtime pay, or have a tax bill that you are having to deal with, you should submit a complaint. Wonder why there is a paramedic shortage? Did you even know? The highest paid jobs in the states with the largest population ( workload) are not anywhere enough to live on without massive overtime. Today’s job seekers are not willing to work 70 hours a week at a job that is physically and mentally taxing, dangerous, and often thankless with no hope of work/ life balance. Good for them. All the “calling” in the world does not pay the rent, a mortgage today is unattainable at these wages. The sickest patients are dying in rural emergency departments because no qualified medics are available to transfer them to the higher care facilities they need for cardiac, stroke, and severe respiratory illness. No exaggeration, this is happening every day. There needs to be a massive shift in values in this country. Fairly compensating the people who work 24/7/365 in every kind of weather, sometimes in austere circumstances to save lives needs to be prioritized. This map is shameful. If your town government is balking at the cost of emergency services, please get out and support your local EMS service.
