The recent fire at the Bridlington Waste Centre is a stark reminder of the hazards associated with waste management. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the incident highlights the need for stringent safety measures and proper disposal practices, especially when dealing with potentially hazardous materials like batteries and flammable waste. Fires in waste management facilities can escalate quickly, posing serious risks to workers, first responders, and the surrounding community. This incident underscores the importance of having the correct measures in place particuarly having the right storage systems for waste batteries! As we move forward, it’s essential that we all do our part. We were enlisted to work on a project for a residential development project in Cambridge... The problem? ⤵️ The site, previously a commercial property, had been demolished, revealing significant amounts of chrysotile asbestos cement fragments in the ground. The initial quote for simply removing the waste to landfill came with substantial costs. The solution? ⤵️ After a thorough site visit and additional testing, we implemented an on-site waste treatment plan. This plan promoted waste recovery and identified significant savings. Within two weeks, SoilEx successfully removed the hazardous asbestos fragments from the waste, leaving behind non-hazardous soils and recyclable demolition debris. Essentially, we are not really recycling anymore and have been incinerating waste at an alarming rate, releasing pollutants into our breathing air and atmosphere. What happens to our waste? At #verge23 I had an opportunity to visit a waste management facility run by a remarkable company called GreenWaste. They collect, sort, recycle, compost, and minimize landfill waste for the city of San Jose and other places in California. Walking through their state-of-the-art facility that uses robotic separation technology was an enlightening but also sobering experience. A few things I learnt: #reducewaste we generate too much waste in the USA. And rarely think of what happens to it when the waste management company takes it away. Unfortunately, it is a messy, toxic, and stinky subject, which most of us ignore when it works well, but cannot tolerate if the system fails us. I will be a lot more conscious about reducing my waste footprint in the future. #recycle a lot of valuable recyclable stuff gets thrown into the general garbage, which only a few facilities like GreenWaste take the effort to sort through and recover. It takes a few minutes extra every week to place the right items in the right bins, to save the economy billions of dollars while benefiting the environment. #recyclability unfortunately, we also saw a lot of unrecyclable items in the recycling bins, that requires a lot of manpower and cost to remove before the valuable stuff can be sent for reprocessing.
