Do you ever wonder how someone got that great job at a global architecture firm? I do! That’s why I enjoyed hearing Iben Falconer's career journey to arrive at her post as Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)'s Global Marketing and Business Development Leader.   Among the nuggets she shared with Silvia Lee, AIA, was not being afraid of change as this can lead to great opportunities.   Sharing some advice from her father, Falconer suggests that design professionals regularly write down what they like doing and what they’re good at. Over time, some trends become apparent and this can help identify where to go next with one’s career. Falconer also shared an observation about the business side of architecture. “I used to think it was a shame there weren’t more career paths that were more business minded to bring those gifts and keep those gifts within the practice of architecture. Deeply Grateful. I tend to move quietly and with few words, but I'd like to share a few thoughts from the process and from sitting with the good news: 1. Exposure matters, and putting yourself (especially the unpolished and uncertain side) out there really does make a difference - for yourself and those looking for the path you've cleared. I've been fortunate to do things I once never imagined, not because they felt impossible, but because I hadn't yet discovered the spaces, the tools, or the language to make sense of it. 2. As an artist who has spent hundreds of quiet, solitary hours sweeping and rearranging shattered glass — If something matters to you, show up fully for it. It's important and real if you treat it as such, no matter what it is. That commitment to self, however slow or unassuming, has taught me that anything done with intention has its own value that can translate to all aspects of life, and good will come from it. 3. There's no deadline for growth or success. Celebrate where you're at, celebrate those around you, and embrace the journey on your own timeline. 4. Above all, I'm grateful for the people I get to work and share space with. They inspire me, and I want to get better at showing how much they mean to me. We keep each other moving forward, and we need each other now more than ever, you feel me? Invest in the people you care about and move with intention. This recognition is a reminder of what has brought me joy over the years. Cheers to the journey and to the people who make it all worthwhile. Here's to the next 40 ✌

It is very inspiring to see the leadership here and the social engagement towards non-profit development- marrying together affordable housing, community and the church mission. “And then, to top it off, they’ve thrown themselves into the world of social-purpose housing. That started 10 years ago, when Marcon got involved with Lynn Valley United Church, whose leaders wanted to develop housing on their church property. They had assumed it would be the standard deal that most developers want: the church gives the land, the developer puts up the money and takes the profit. Instead, the Paolellas suggested that the church share in the risk, but also the return. “In the end, Lynn Valley now has an annuity every year,” says Kira Gerwing, an expert in social-purpose housing who used to be with Vancity Community Credit Union and now works with an impact investment fund that invests in affordable housing in BC and Alberta. Since then, Marcon has partnered with the non-profit developer Catalyst Community Developments Society to build two Vancouver social-housing projects, as well as working on housing projects at other church properties in the Lower Mainland. Now, Nic is in the process of setting up a non-profit entity that would use the back-office support system and expertise of Marcon, under the direction of a board chosen to focus on the mission of social housing rather than simply the standard one of finding a new development vehicle for the company.” #leadership #socialenterprise #development #community #northvancoucwr #vancouver

Werfen recently celebrated the grand opening of its cutting-edge, 169,500-square-foot Advanced Research and Development facility in Bedford, MA. The $50 million, two-story building includes 27,500 square feet of lab space, 91,000 square feet of office space per floor, and ground-level parking for 160 vehicles. When I opened the doors to McKissack & McKissack, there were many uncertainties: I stepped away from a stable career, I didn’t have a roster of clients, and there were very few people who looked like me in the #AEC industry. It all comes down to the PIDCs mission statement on the side of the company truck. Sometimes, thoughts and intentions are so obvious they are hidden in plain sight. A Unifying Component. Being someone who can meet the client as well as the contractor and tradesmen where they are at. Being able to work with both to get the best outcome for the owner, contractor, and ourselves both personally and as a company. Understanding that there will be challenges along the way, meeting schedule, staying on budget, having to think outside of the box when working on historically unique buildings, relying on years of experience with everyone on the team. Empowering people to speak up and share. If you are the only one speaking, you are not learning ~ President Lyndon Johnson What accomplishments / Success are you most proud of after 5 years at PIDC? My journey into construction started in 1997. I was attending Wentworth and was in the Architectural Engineering program. My freshman year project was to draw up plans as if I were the architect of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. Fast forward 25 years later, I was installing the state of Massachusetts first 3 door elevator inside that same church. This elevator would and is now helping provide accessibility from their underground parking garage, exterior plaza, to the church's auditorium. Being able to work on a Landmark building within the city of Boston and leaving your own mark. Providing a unique service that is actually helping people.
