Many are now coming back from a well-deserved break! Independent pubs join CityStack in wishing you a very happy new year. May this year be full of good news to be celebrated at your favourite pub. As we enter the most dreaded period for the hospitality industry, we'd like to share a rallying call from our group of 50+ independent pubs, to show support by visiting these much-loved establishments, and help them stay afloat. After the festivities, many of you might be thinking of taking a break from drinking, embracing dry January. As a result, the first quarter of the year is often the most testing time for many independent pubs as they face a massive decrease in footfall due to dry January, poor weather and customers reassessing their leisure budget, all the while having to keep their businesses open while paying the same overheads. Sadly, some do not manage to stay afloat with so many obstacles to overcome. This is the exact reason why we, at CityStack, decided to tackle this challenge and encourage Londoners to visit them during this difficult period by offering free food and drink. Our £25 stack of beer mats lets you get £100 worth of food and drink at independent pubs. Each pack includes a special beer mat to show at any ten of our 50+ independent pubs. Have it stamped to get £10 off your bill. Collect 10 stamps, save £100 (more info on citystack.co)! If you’re seeking resolutions ideas for 2024, we couldn’t recommend enough supporting independent businesses by actively visiting them. Starting Dry January? Our pubs offer many choices which don’t involve alcohol. If you can, please try to visit a few pubs during this very quiet period, to help them survive and thrive. 🙏 Thank you very much for your support. #supportindependentpubs #independentpub #london #londonpubs #dryjanuary #supportpubs #discountatpubs #cheappub #visitpubs #supportyourlocal #ldn #happynewyear #notdryjanuary #beermats #giftidea #bestpubs #bestlondonpubs #independentpubs

🍻 Pub closures seem to dominate the headlines, painting a picture that the days of the boozer are declining. It would be easy to believe that that the only venues that are achieving success are those who are more premium and food-focussed, such as those featured in the recent Top 50 gastropubs.🍽️🥂 The lack of focus given to community wet-led pubs is something that I’ve found fascinating for many years. Admittedly, these venues may not be the most instagrammable, but from a drink’s perspective at least, they continue to be where a large proportion of the volume and value sits, and they very much represent the beating heart of the on trade. It was encouraging therefore to read the comments in today’s Propel Friday News Briefing from William Rice, talking about how “…there is so much investment coming into the sector and that there is so much to be excited about that well invested and well-run pubs offering a quality experience is where people want to spend their money.” Craft Union Pub Company are a great example of a business which is investing in the sector, seeing their philosophy of putting brilliant pubs back at the heart of local communities well and truly paying dividends. Data from Hospitality Data Insights (HDI) shows that they’re the second biggest winner out of a cohort of 55 different Pubs & Bars chains over the last 5 years, with their overall share of wallet 2.7 times higher in the 12 weeks ending 6/2/24 than it was back in 2019. Their estate has grown significantly over this time, but a key part of their success is undoubtedly the fact that they have a relevant consumer proposition which is executed with brilliance – well-invested community pubs at the heart of their local communities. 🏆📈 Interested to know who took the number 1 spot in terms of growth over the last five years? Probably no surprise, but the brand that has seen the greatest growth over this period is Lounge from Loungers plc. Picture shows my local Craft Union, which funnily enough has recently seen Centivo Lounge open a couple of doors up from it! Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to understand more about the types of analysis that we can do looking at individual local markets and/or sites in-detail. 📊🔍 #HospitalityData #hospitalitysolutions #pubs #hospitalitysuccess #ukhospitality

Many people on here will be all too aware of the issues facing hospitality. Rising costs for businesses, combined with pressures on people’s disposable income, have leant heavily on pubs, bars, night clubs and restaurants. Add the impact of Covid, from which many in the sector are still recovering, and it’s an industry on a knife edge. Pubs have been close to my heart since I was 14, when I walked into the Duke of Cambridge – long since demolished – in Lewisham, SE London, and bravely ordered half a Carlsberg (for 17p). Years later I got an insight into the issues facing the licensed trade when I was City & Business editor of trade magazine The Publican. We would hear of success stories, but we also wrote increasingly about those running pubs who simply could not make it pay and were going under. According to the Campaign for Real Ale, every week around 25 pubs closed their doors, permanently, in 2023. Demographic shifts are adding to licensees’ woes. People simply don’t drink like they did 30, 40 years ago. Calls for healthier lifestyles are also having an impact. And developers often buy up pubs and demolish or convert them. Large pub chains can weather economic storms better than most, but even well-backed businesses can run into problems. Is it all gloom and doom? Not necessarily. Where they can, independent pubs are diversifying, offering their communities a unique experience. Things don’t get much more unique than a live band playing to a room full of dancing customers. The clip below shows the group I play bass guitar for, The Kings of Oblivion, performing to an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday night at The General Napier, a cracking backstreet boozer in Honor Oak Park, SE London. I’ve been in the band for a long time and we’ve never had people dancing on the tables before. Marv’lus. Not all pubs can or want to host live bands. But with many pubs there’s always something going on. Pubs are often the hub of a community, and as such they strive to serve that community really well. If you like a chat and a pint, or a glass of wine, or a G&T, or one of the increasingly good low/no alcohol beverages that are available over the bar these days, get down to your local – especially if it’s independently owned and operated – and enjoy. You’ll be doing everyone, yourself included, a favour. #freelancewriting #pubs #hospitality #livemusic

CAMRA Hits Out at Whitebread “Mass Pub Closures” The Campaign for Real Ale has expressed ‘utter dismay’ over plans to close sites next to Premier Inns The Campaign for Real Ale has challenged Whitbread to reconsider their decision to close and convert over 100 pubs next to Premier Inns. The pubs are now scheduled to be converted to restaurants for hotel residents or turned into additional hotel rooms. Tom Stainer, CAMRA Chief Executive, has written to Whitbread asking the Board to reconsider their decision, highlighting inconsistencies between the company’s stated values and the actions that have been taken. The letter outlines the Campaign’s ‘utter dismay’ upon hearing the news and highlights online statements that Whitbread has made about their ‘trusted brand’, ‘culture and values’ and commitment to ‘make a positive contribution to the communities’ that the brand’s outlets serve. In the letter, Stainer says: “I would ask that you carefully reflect on whether the actions that you have put in train align with your previous commitments, and your outlined values. I would argue that they do not. “Closing a pub – which is a community amenity facility and gathering space – to the local community that it serves is not only contrary to the aims of your Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, it will also impact upon your ability to maintain that you are a ‘trusted brand’.” CAMRA’s expert pub-saving campaigners are also concerned about how the conversions have taken place. Whitbread have been able to use a grey area in the current planning system in England that makes it easier to claim that pubs are in fact restaurants, which makes change of use more likely to be granted. CAMRA’s National Planning Policy Adviser, Paul Ainsworth, said: “Concerningly, it appears that most of these pubs have been closed to the public, under the argument that they are restaurants, and worryingly most local authorities have accepted that. “We are now campaigning for a legal definition of a pub for planning purposes so that if you can buy a drink at the bar without purchasing a meal, the venue would be considered a pub. “In the wake of scandals such as the scandalous Crooked House demolition, unacceptably high levels of unlawful conversions and demolitions, and now this, we need the new Government to act now to strengthen planning protections and enforcement options for local councils.” Read More:

Great piece in the Financial Times about the slow and steady recovery of the British pub 🍺 There's an interesting idea here that the pub is not a fixed thing - it changes and adapts to suit the needs of the time it’s in. The increase of pubs selling food has meant this is what consumers expect from their boozers now, and so many groups are changing their venues to align with this. Particularly heartening is companies like Heineken "reopening 62 [pubs] that closed in recent years and investing £40m on this and other refurbishments, such as improving gardens and expanding kitchens." And who can argue with more pubs? Just in time for summer as well ☀️ https://lnkd.in/erHJEpz4

Great to see the huge enthusiasm for the future of our 𝐩𝐮𝐛 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 at the recent Propel Excellence in Pub & Bar Retailing Conference 2024 and that ongoing diversity will be at the heart of it ❤️ This includes the diversity of the continually evolving customer base: 💬 "I think pubs will be thriving as they’ll have a far more diverse set of customers in the pubs ... I’m excited about that and think it’s great for the sector." 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧-𝐁𝐞𝐞𝐫 from 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 💬 "The future is positive ... There will be more ageless and classless pubs, that’s where I see the big change being, and I think we’re seeing that already.” 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐬𝐨𝐧 from 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐮𝐛 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩. Plus the ongoing diversity of pub operators, offers and experiences: 💬 "I hope there isn’t too much more consolidation as part of the joy of the British pub industry is it is still relatively fragmented and there are an awful lot of good independent pubs and smaller medium sized businesses that manage to thrive. Although the pub will have to continue modernising, the traditional aspects where there’s great company and great refreshment must stay at the heart forever." 𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 At Keane we LOVE working in the pub sector creating concepts, brands and experiences (including for Greene King and City Pub Group) that we hope have played a small part in some of this evolution in recent years. And long may it continue... power to the pub! 🍺✊ #pubs #hospitality #diversity #trends #greatbritishpub
