**📀 Record of the Day: Prince – Dirty Mind (1980) 🎸** Released in 1980, *Dirty Mind* is the album that turned Prince into a legend. 🌟 A fearless fusion of new wave, funk, rock, and R&B, it’s raw, explicit, and revolutionary. Prince recorded most of it in his home studio, playing nearly every instrument himself! 🥁🎹🎸 **Recording and Production:** Prince recorded *Dirty Mind* in his home studio in Minneapolis, known as Kiowa Trail Home Studio, during a prolific creative period. The album’s lo-fi, stripped-down sound was a departure from the more polished production of his previous work. Prince played almost all the instruments on the album himself, including guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums, which allowed him to have complete creative control. The production of *Dirty Mind* was intentionally minimalistic, emphasizing raw emotion and directness over complex arrangements. This approach was influenced by the punk and new wave movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The result was a sound that was both innovative and accessible, breaking new ground in the fusion of genres. **Legacy:** *Dirty Mind* is often credited with helping to establish Prince as a groundbreaking artist who wasn’t afraid to tackle controversial subjects. The album received critical acclaim and is regarded as a pioneering work that influenced the direction of pop and R&B music in the 1980s. Its fusion of genres and daring lyrical content continue to inspire artists across various musical landscapes. 🔥 Tracks like “When You Were Mine” and “Head” still push boundaries and inspire today’s artists. This album redefined music in the '80s and beyond. If you haven’t experienced it yet, now’s the time! 🕺💥 #Prince #DirtyMind #MusicLegend #NowPlaying #IconicAlbums #RecordOfTheDay

Album Pick: Danger Mouse & Jemini - Born Again I think my favorite thing of coming back from my Florida vacation is that I came back to some truly terrific vinyl I had been waiting on. So let’s dive right into one of those albums. Born Again by Jemini and the Danger Mouse is a direct follow up to their 2003 Ghetto Pop Life album, in fact it was made at the same time and for some reason (I haven’t gotten the full story here) was released 20 years later. So what does Born again bring to the table. Well you still have the Danger Mouse early 2000s production, that is heavy on pianos, drums, bass loops, etc. and less choral. It is interesting, and certainly a good addition to the underground 90s/00s rap collection. “All I” (A1) is a good way to kick off an album but it really starts bopping on “Looked Up” (A2), with just a solid delivery and the production kicks into high gear with the keyboards on “Me” (A3), and does not let up after that. Some truly terrific samples, but you can see a bit of the decline from the first one. This is a good shadow, but it does not replace the original. Early Danger mouse is all about providing a decent canvas with which to paint lyrically poetic numbers over. There is not a lot to say here, if you liked Ghetto Pop Life, then this is a good album to sync your teeth in (though I would argue Ghetto Pop life is better) if you didn’t then this won’t change your mind, but it is certainly a fun album to have and my kids love the album art. Finally out! Please welcome my new album SONGS FOR AN EMPTY AUDIENCE! https://lnkd.in/dzKHYeiT I've been working on this album for what seems like forever, finding small pockets of time throughout the pandemic, crazy double studies, travelling back and forth to Trondheim, back and forth to Oslo, next to music teaching, art museum guiding, choir leading, puppy training, house sales and the most important: creating a home and a family. This album, these songs are a product of my hopes and dreams, as well as a kind of therapy for when life has been hard, and the hopes and dreams instead have cut like knives and burned like fire and ice. Maybe you can relate. Maybe you can listen to them and think: "ah yes, that's exactly how I also felt". If my songs can give you even the tiniest hint of comfort, recognition or putting words to a feeling you didn't know you had, then I've achieved my goal. This is my art. Art for art's sake, not for the amount of views or for hitting the charts. Hence the title of the album, "songs for an empty audience". These are songs for people who have crossed my path, left a mark and are out of my life. They will probably never hear it. But there are also songs for those who are yet to come. The title is also related to life as a musician during the pandemic, playing music for a steadily declining audience. Music doesn't always need to be shared. Instead, one can lock oneself into a cozy, softly lit studio, and create beauty through different kinds of musical sounds, words and expressions. I hope you enjoy this album. At least I do. And that is what counts in the end, isn't it? A big thanks again to Rhys Marsh and his Autumnsongs recording studio in Trondheim, who with his musical mastery has brought my songs and stories to life.

Album Pick: The Smile - A light for Attracting Attention What do you call a debut album that is part jazz, part experimental, part prog rock, and where the lead singer is 55? Well you call it “The Smile” you also call it an interesting, and rather fun experiment in sound by two of the founding members of Radiohead and one of the founding members of the Sons of Kemet (a fascinating Jazz band in their own right). In this case you call it a fun way to start a Thursday. For reasons that we will skip over for now, with a debut later on down the road, I skipped posting yesterday, but I did end up digging into a few albums, and this is one of those that I have not yet covered. The smile is equal parts straight rock from the 90s, and experimentation in sound. It seems almost discordant in it’s moods. Starting with two electronic mellow pieces in “The Same” (A1) and “The Opposite” (A2) before busting into their first single, “You will Never be on Television again” (A3) which seems like it belongs closer to Pablo Honey. The nature of the album is to be a little funky and a little all over the place. But I am digging it. It is a solid freshman effort (their second album which I also own is almost perfect, no notes!) from a band that clearly has an identity that bridges a few genres. It is not perfect, but it is thoroughly enjoyable. When the bass line kicks in on “The Smoke” (B2) or is coupled with a riveting electric guitar on “Thin Thing” (C1) you realize why this experiment is totally awesome. If you miss Radiohead, or are just interested in something that cross a few genres, and makes you think “Is that the new Gorrilaz track?” or “Is this that new Broken Bells?” Then this is an album to check. Will review their other effort later as I just got it. Song Pick: The Smoke (B2) - https://lnkd.in/egExTZ5i #MusicalMusings #DailyAlbum

Album Pick: Atmosphere - So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously Have I done this one before? Not sure, but I was in the mood for it this morning, so here we are. Atmosphere is great, aside from some fairly interesting lyrics and great flow from Slug, I feel like Ant as a producer is underrated for what he does on production. I was honestly picking between two Atmosphere Records this morning, and the other might make the cut for tomorrow. Slug's lyrics of late have shifted to social commentary, and I am here for it. Now It's not exactly the subtle word play of Aesop Rock (who he partnered with on Felt 3) but there is something to be said about his choices, "Okay" (A1): It's gonna be alright It'll be okay, I think that needs to be established For all of us that are easily distracted Impatiently waiting for that American dream Staring at the cracked screen of my anti-facts machine Crash landed where the woke intersect with the exhausted They asked if I'm depressed, I don't doubt it I was told it all began as a quest for some knowledge Progress after you process the conflict But it really is the combination of Slug's delivery and lyrics with Ant's choices on production lots of electric guitar and drums, that bring it back to early Beastie Boys, while still feeling utterly modern "Dotted Lines" (A4) makes it feel like a much bigger operation than just two people. Atmosphere has evolved a lot from their early days of hit loops on an old 8 channel mixer. There is really a whole lot to choose from here. Every song is interesting and fun, and while GodLovesUgly probably has more standout hits their latest trip in the record studio has a much more even tempered flow, and i have to say with every new album I tend to like them more. Which says a lot about the evolution of the band. Song Pick: In my head - https://lnkd.in/eu3tzD5G #MusicalMusings #DailyAlbum
