Last week new research by the The Daffodil Centre shined a spotlight on how Australia’s alcohol use is impacting mortality. There were an estimated 9,029 deaths caused by alcohol use in Australia in 2021, accounting for 5.3% of all deaths The study revealed that every additional 7 drinks per week someone has increases the relative risk of death from: -alcohol-related cancers by 12% -digestive system disease by 32% -falls by 23% -all-cause mortality by 6% Read the full study via the link https://lnkd.in/ghuKamPH We must reduce alcohol related harms and deaths in Australia. We know what works to reduce alcohol related harms and now it's time for governments to take action and prioritise the health and wellbeing of our community.

The on-going but necessary discussions we need to have in society about how we view and address the causes of obesity. This will then clarify the kind of policy options appropriate in the UK context. In this article, the key words for those working in the built environment sectors are ‘obesogenic environment’ and the ‘food environment’. They will be familiar to some but not familiar to others. https://lnkd.in/eP5EqV5y

Conclusions: This cohort study among older drinkers from the UK did not find evidence of a beneficial association between low-risk alcohol consumption and mortality; however, we observed a detrimental association of even low-risk drinking in individuals with socioeconomic or health-related risk factors, especially for cancer deaths. The attenuation of the excess mortality associated with alcohol among individuals who preferred to drink wine or drink only during meals requires further investigation to elucidate the factors that may explain it. Finally, these results have important public health implications because they identify inequalities in the detrimental health outcomes associated with alcohol that should be addressed to reduce the high burden of disease of alcohol use.

Sweden: Knowledge about the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products - Report on a Government assignment “The compilation shows that the scientific evidence concerning the health risks of using tobacco and nicotine products varies, depending on how long a product has been on the market, the number of people using it and the amount of research available. This is a report on the Government assignment to compile and make the knowledge on the various harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products available. The assignment was received by the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the National Board of Health and Welfare and the Swedish Agency for Health and Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU) on 24 March 2022. The report may also be of interest to other actors who work with tobacco and nicotine-related questions locally, regionally and nationally.” https://lnkd.in/gHwEWX-7

2016: "The level of alcohol consumption that minimised harm across health outcomes was zero (95% UI 0·0–0·8) standard drinks per week." (1) funding of the study: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 2022: "For adults over age 40, health risks from alcohol consumption vary by age and region. Consuming a small amount of alcohol for people in this age group can provide some health benefits, such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes." (2) funding of the study: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. 2023: "Gates purchased 10.8 million shares, worth 883 million euros ($939.87 million) at current market prices, triggering a disclosure requirement under Dutch stock market rules. "It is clear that alcohol consumption is related to a higher risk of cancer from the first drop, so we think that medical advice should not recommend consuming alcohol to improve health," one of the authors of the study is quoted as saying. https://lnkd.in/dxpW5NPm [Paper https://lnkd.in/djiVzxDE] AR It is best not to treat alcohol as a health tonic, as we have been led to think of it. This is not extreme or controversial. There are many proven ways to improve health which have none of alcohol's risks. But, of course, we can do things which aren't good for our health. We can only do so knowingly if we first know the facts.

1. A federal study concludes that alcohol consumption, even at low levels, is linked to a higher risk of death. 2. The study was published by the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD) and has faced significant criticism. 3. U.S. Representative Mike Thompson expressed concerns about the transparency of the study's review process. 4. The ICCPUD study will inform the 2025 U.S. Dietary Guidelines, which traditionally state that moderate drinking is safe. 5. Findings contradict another report by the National Academies of Sciences, which indicated moderate drinkers have a lower risk of death. 6. The ICCPUD report states that the risk of dying from alcohol begins at low consumption levels and increases with higher intake. 7. Consuming more than seven drinks a week raises the death risk to 1 in 1,000, and more than nine drinks increases it to 1 in 100. 8. The report highlights increased cancer risks associated with any alcohol use, particularly affecting women more significantly 9. Critics argue that the ICCPUD study is biased and lacks input from a diverse range of health experts 10. The upcoming dietary guidelines may revise the recommendation on safe alcohol consumption levels, aligning with the WHO’s declaration of no safe level of alcohol

Yes - creating a society that favors healthy (healthful) food should be an explicit goal of our government. But achieving this will take decades and not solve our obesity epidemic anytime soon - in the meantime we will need GLP-1 agonists. #health #Ozempic #realfood https://lnkd.in/erjDaJCU
