1964 marked a transformative year for Detroit, as it embarked on a major overhaul of its transportation infrastructure. Notably, Interstate 75 (I-75), also known as Fisher Freeway, was introduced, weaving through the city and heralding a new era of connectivity. This period also saw the early development of the Chrysler Freeway, initiated in 1958, showcasing Detroit's foresight in adapting to the automobile's dominance. These developments symbolized Detroit's evolution and its pivotal role in the automotive industry. The new freeways not only facilitated the movement of vehicles but also connected communities, boosted the economy, and highlighted the city's capacity for innovation. 🛵 Beep Beep! Do you ride a bike? Or prefer to hop on as a pillion instead? Do you use an Electric Scooter or one that runs on Fuel? (Brownie points if you use an electric!) Either way, how safe do you feel? Are there things you do to make sure you’re comfortable and driving safely? 🏍️ I’m conducting a brief survey for research purposes to understand how you, as a rider or pillion, view, understand and practice safety while riding a 2 Wheeler. 🔎 Your identities will be anonymous, but insights are extremely valuable. This survey takes only 2-3 minutes to complete. ⏱️ 🚦Get, set, go! https://lnkd.in/d2yBVxq7 Thank you for contributing to my research!

#mobilitymoment Memorial Day weekend is here, and it's important to stay safe on the roads and waterways. Did you know that this weekend is the most dangerous time to travel by land or sea? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA, there are four times as many crashes this weekend than any other holiday. Shockingly, 37% of crashes involve drunk driving and 52% of fatalities include someone not wearing a seatbelt. Here are some tips to stay safe: - Heavier traffic - plan ahead and watch traffic for the best times and routes. - Don't drink and drive, whether by road or sea. - Avoid distracted driving and pay attention. If you're tired, pull over or let someone else drive. - Always wear your seatbelt, no matter where you are located in the vehicle. Let's all stay alert and follow traffic rules this Memorial Day weekend. And most importantly, let's remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. #memorialday #trafficsafety #drunkdriving #seatbelts Transportation is Mobility and Mobility is Freedom ™

The Luton Airport car park fire last year exemplifies how guidance has not shifted. The growing threat of modern vehicles and their combustible materials is concerning given that guidance for car parks has not changed much from the 1960s. It's time that guidance got that update. One indicator will be the approach to these types of premises and whether they are better protected: https://lnkd.in/eGC4p4Gx #FireSafety #BuildingRegulations #FireLoss

USA first reported Pedestrian Death 1899. As a follow up to my post on ISA - saw this interesting post on the first pedestrian fataility involving a motor vehicle in the USA. This article talks about a petition in 1923 to install speed Governors on vehicles in cities. This was in response to the soring death rate of pedestrians in cities. In the early days of motor vehicles (through to the 1920s) a majority of the fatailities in cities involved the death of pedestrians - who were not use to the faster moving vehicles. The article then talks about how the big car manufactures made it about the poor behaviour of the pedestrians - like jaywalking. This perspective seems to be still with us - at least in the minds of some of our politicians. But who was first - the pedestrians or the motorists. It’s the motorists who were introduced into the urban environment and this lead to rises in pedestrian deaths. I find it ironic that we want to control the e-scooters speeds or ban them outright (the new modes of transport), because of the danger to pedestrians. Yet we won’t do that to private cars and light trucks - Even though the bulk of pedestrian deaths occur when they are trying to cross the road and are hit by a vehicle. I think we need to partner with public health officials, doctors and surgeons to promote speed management in urban areas to address this 100 plus years of tragic carnage on our city and town roads. #pedestrian safety #visionzero #trafficsafety #publichealth.
On the 125th anniversary of the first known pedestrian-automobile fatality in the US, check out Peter Norton's history of the evolution of pedestrian safety throughout the American automobile age for Smithsonian Institution. https://lnkd.in/ewkBFPMS
