ChemCentre is currently recruiting for a Senior Scientist to join the Research and Innovation team and manage a significant portfolio of research related to Mining and its impact on the environment. I have been a member of the ChemCentre R&I team for over 5 years now, and have found it a fantastic place to be to undertake applied research in all aspects of chemistry - I would highly recommend it as an alternative to a 'traditional' academic career. Pros include: -Great collaborative projects with a wide range of internal and external teams. Some of my favourite work has been with the ChemCentre Emergency Response and Physical Evidence teams. -An amazing collection of analytical instrumentation - all in one building -Very friendly colleagues who are also exceptionally skilled scientists. And last time I heard, more than 50% were women... -Flexitime! And a much better work-life balance. -Much less pressure to publish, though it is still welcomed and appreciated. -No teaching (i.e. lectures), but still heaps of opportunities for co-supervision of students. -While it is advertised as a fixed-term appointment, there are lots of avenues to a permanent position once you are in. -Focusing on applied research means you can see the direct benefits and impact of your research in changes in regulation and practice, and benefit to WA. And for fairness, I will mention some Cons: -Some of the coolest and most unique research projects I have been part of are completely confidential and I can't tell anyone about them!! (not even colleagues in some cases). -You may have to work in an open plan space, there are very few contained offices. -Comparably pay scales are a bit lower than equivalent uni levels, and the super is nowhere near as good (though I have kept my habit of 7% voluntary contribution to help make up for that, and I elected to stay with UniSuper) -Parental leave allowances at ChemCentre are fine, but the Uni ones are better. Though overall I think work flexibility is better at ChemCentre, and you are less likely to work 'extra hours' if you are part time. Overall, I absolutely recommend ChemCentre as a place for a fulfilling applied research career. So if you have research strengths in Mining and the Environment, then why not consider it? The job ad is here - applications close in just over a week on Monday 29 January 2024! https://lnkd.in/gujD6w3C
