UPDATE: A RESCUE IS TAKING ROSCOE! Original Post: This is the EXACT dog everyone wishes they had...the one that people say "wow, what a good boy". He is like this in a shelter because he is completely out of his element, and he is still calm and lucid. These dogs commonly adapt quickly to a home - they understand a home. Unfortunately, people are led to believe they need long decompression periods and will take a long time to bond. Do not underestimate the Roscoe's of the world. He would have thrived in a foster home, but the shelter does not offer that option. Killing him was inhumane and unnecessary. He was an innocent creature on death-row. GIVE LOVE: Shower your rescue dog🐾🐾 with love in the form of a leisurely walk, a delicious treat, a new toy, or just some extra cuddle time. ADOPT: Adopt a dog🐾🐾 from a local shelter or a pure breed rescue group to save a life. FOSTER: Provide a temporary home for a rescue dog🐾🐾. Many dogs🐾🐾 abandoned to shelters benefit from socialization, or would just thrive better away from the shelter environment. Others may need some medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place. This is also a great way to see if you’re ready to adopt and make the life-long commitment. HELP A SHELTER: Check your local shelter website to donate and to view their wish list of much needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. You can also host a bake sale, car wash, or other event and donate the proceeds back to the shelter. VOLUNTEER: Help out at your local shelter. Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist (H.O.P.E.) is a not-for-profit organization of animal lovers from Saratoga and surrounding counties who are dedicated to assisting animals whose owners have passed away or can no longer keep them. Some of the pets are surrendered directly to H.O.P.E. but others come from various local rescues or shelters which are at capacity. Many are senior dogs and cats or have special needs. H.O.P.E. gives these homeless pets a second chance for a wonderful life; to be part of a family, to be a therapy pet or just to be someone’s best friend. The goal of H.O.P.E. is to find suitable adopters who will provide these pets with a lifelong commitment of love and care.

At Beartha we stay pawsome with our furry friends! We are working towards starting our Program to allow individuals that are displaced to have a place for their furbaby to stay while they get back on their feet. Also foster animals from our local Animal Shelter to help them create more space to help other furbabies in need. Some people may not know this but some animal shelters are at full capacity and sometimes families have to call months ahead in order to make an appointment. Due to that some people go to extreme measures and may leave their pet at the location, the pet becomes a stray, or the people and the individual lives in the street. Pets are family and shouldn’t be left behind. Our future goal is to be able to have a location where we can take in both the paw parent and the pet but doing this is the step in the right direction.

Between 5% to 10% of homeless people in the United States own pets (mainly dogs and/or cats). Of the 241,117 dogs and cats that entered North Carolina shelters, 170,753 found positive placements, while 47,652 were killed (76% were cats), for a save rate of 70.82%. 25.58% of North Carolina shelters are no-kill (a state is considered to be no-kill when every brick-and-mortar shelter serving and/or located within the state has a save rate of 90% or higher). A single gift. Everyone has it. With that gift, you can shape the world, like a god. What is that gift? What will you do with it? ⚡️𝙂𝙞𝙛𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙣𝙨⚡️ In Greek myths, two primordial gods were charged with giving humans and animals the qualities that made them unique. Animals got their gifts first: fangs, fur, claws, and more. Humans were given only one gift: fire. "Fire" represented enlightenment. It represented knowledge. It represented the power to build. Fire, which we each have inside, is why you and I have resilience, the means to create, and the ability to connect with ourselves and with others. The power of fire is the power of the gods. 🔥𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝘿𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙮. 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙖𝙫𝙚🔥 But too often, our Olympian powers are used to destroy. Over 10 years ago, I was hired as the first General Counsel, and later the head of Operations, for what has become the USA's largest provider of domestic violence shelter services, Urban Resource Institute (URI). My first Ops project was to oversee the buildout of a dog park for one of the shelters, as part of a program called PALS ("People & Animals Living Safely"). A photo from that dog park is below. During this project, I learned of the profound nexus between animal abuse and domestic violence -- a hidden plague of genuinely shocking magnitude. I heard stories of abusers who would threaten to kill a pet if the abused partner left. My heart broke when finding out about animals who were, themselves, abused in order to intimidate someone else in the home. And I sobbed inside whenever I heard about a dog or cat so traumatized by witnessing abuse that the animal itself developed mental health issues. But the fire that motivated human beings to behave like monsters from the myths also ignited the fire within everyone at URI, making sure that some of the very first domestic violence shelters to allow pets inside could be places that healed both animals and their humans. ⚡️𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙤𝙙𝙨⚡️ For months, the Ops team worked tirelessly with URI's program staff to make sure that the PALS program's early days would succeed. We built a beautiful dog park, with trellises, staircases, and dog tunnels to help keep the pets fit. We redesigned the furnishings of the shelter apartments to make them pet-friendly. We even thought through details like water placement, plants, and double-fence entrances to make sure that the PALS experience always provided respite and safety. It's hard to believe that a decade has passed. PALS has since expanded and succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. To the pets whose lives we have changed, our work must seem like that of gods. But what's truly godlike are the hearts of every single person who has been a part of making this incredible milestone a reality. Find out more about URI and PALS here: www.URINYC.org .
