The European Commission published today a Cycling Declaration, with 36 commitments ranging from general policies and strategies to better data collection. I'm especially happy about: - Commitment 18: "reflecting cycling in investments at all levels of governance". Too often cycling is considered only as a local/municipal issue, which results in missed opportunities in higher level investments, for example rail or water management. Those omissions are usually very difficult and expensive to fix afterwards. - The subtitle of Chapter V: "Everyone should be able to cycle in a safe and secure manner". Recognising universal right to active mobility is an important paradigm shift. People can choose to not cycle, but they should not be prevented from cycling by unsafe public spaces.
The European Cycling Declaration has been launched by the European Commission! This is a milestone for cycling in Europe and reflects the advocacy and policy demands aimed at improving and increasing cycling in Europe.
