If you ask Matthew McKenna what his hobbies are, he’ll likely tell you studying. Matt just earned his Masters of Engineering Degree from the University of California, Riverside, taking the classes online, one per quarter, over the last two years.   “The ability to go online, at my own pace, was important to me,” Matt says. “I’m in the field a lot, so I was looking for that type of flexibility. I was fortunate to receive a lot of support from Loureiro while I was earning my Masters.”   Matt’s journey to Loureiro started at a career fair at the University of Connecticut during his senior year. Matt, who had a love for math and science growing up, initially entered UConn as a biomedical engineering major, switching to environmental engineering after his first semester. His path was confirmed as he embarked on a series of internships during his junior and senior years.   “I think for anyone in school studying engineering, it’s important to get as many internships as you can in a variety of fields,” Matt says. “Even with environmental engineering, there are a lot of different paths. I did internships for both the state / federal sector and within industrial environments. Today we shine a light on one of our student interns, Mitchell Swicegood. He is a Process Engineering intern in Power and Recovery at Smurfit Westrock in Va. He took some time to share with us. What is your favorite part part of the job so far? "It has been being able to work in a new area of the mill. During my previous internships, I had not ventured to the power and recovery area of the mills. This has given me unique perspectives on how the process works. I have enjoyed getting to work on the massive boilers and lime kilns which are burning large amounts of fuel daily. I could stand all day at the viewports and watch the black liquor get burned up and, come winter, I'll be glad to be working in a hot area." What does your day to day look like? "My day begins with the morning production meeting where we go over the previous night's production and shift notes. We also cover the maintenance tasks for the day and short term items that need to be addressed. After the meeting, I go with one of the other interns to complete a thermographic survey of the lime kilns. Most days, I have some reports to fill out and then I can move on to my projects. I have a variety of projects that I'm working on, so it depends on the day what tests I decide to do. In the afternoon, there is another production meeting right after the shift change; and then, I am free to finish up whatever I have left and leave for the day." How does the role relate to your studies? "In classroom we learn about different types of tools, and in an internship we master specific ones." How has the PSE program prepared you for this internship? "The PSE program has helped me prepare for my internship by connecting me with industry resources and the knowledge necessary to succeed. It is a fantastic resource to have access to the TAPPI library where I can go find information on a machine if I am unsure. The other great thing the PSE program provides is opportunities to interact with Industry professionals at TAPPI Student Summit. Here we are able to interview for possible positions and also learn more about the industry before we head off to a mill." What do you do after work and on weekends? "Most days, after work, I head back to the intern house and work on some homework for my summer classes. I try to get some exercise like a run in and then cook dinner. On the weekends, all the interns will get together at one of the houses and have a bonfire one night. There are also several good golf courses nearby; so several of the interns have been playing at least once a week." 🌿 Reflecting on a Fulfilling Summer 🌞🔬 Hello everyone! I hope you're having an awesome summer. I just had to share the incredible experience I had interning at the DCo's Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant, thanks to the Durham County Government's LEEP Program. During my time here, I had the chance to work with different departments and let me tell you, it was a journey of surprises and growth. We thought I'd find myself working with the finance and administrative department? Certainly not me! Yet, this unexpected exposure taught me valuable skills that I'm eager to apply not only to my school's  Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. (FBLA)  chapter but also to my future entrepreneurial ventures. Working with the plant operators and lab analysts, getting hands-on experience was an absolute blast. I've always had a thing for the medical field, technology, and nature. This experience showed me how we can bridge the gap between health and the environment, through Environmental Engineering. Another thing that really stood out to me was the Nitrification and Denitrification🌀 process of the plant's water purification process. The idea of breaking down chemicals naturally without polluting the air was really shocking. The idea that we can tackle climate change issues by mimicking natural processes is so cool. This internship has restored my faith in humanity's capacity to tackle environmental challenges head-on. But it wasn't all about work—this summer gave me so much more. From creating connections with like-minded peers to rubbing shoulders with intellectual minds at DCo. I've come out of this experience with a network and a mindset that'll serve me well in my journey. A heartfelt thank you to DCo for granting me this opportunity. This isn't just a line on my resume; it's a chapter in my story that's left an indelible mark. As always, the intern soils it…. But in our field, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. 😎 I recently had an extremely inspiring day with one of our summer interns, Trebor Moreno showing him the ropes (and rods) of density testing for the soils beneath a future senior housing development. Trebor, a sophomore and fellow Oredigger from the Colorado School of Mines, is a civil engineering major who's balancing a tough academic schedule, being a student-athlete wrestler, and working a full-time job. One thing that blew me away? Trebor's dedication and hustle—he's taking summer classes like physics 2 (which we all know is NOT easy and something I took my senior year) and chemistry 2 to get ahead, working full-time with us while completing certifications, all while training for his next wrestling season. The real highlight was his infectious enthusiasm and attitude - especially his knack for asking insightful questions, and his readiness to dive into new challenges. This guy definitely has a bright future ahead of him and is going to be one helluva engineer! I promised Trebor I'd share his story and that I would ask my network this question to help navigate his future career: What advice would you give to your younger self when you were just starting out as an intern? My two cents? Be open to a world of opportunities. You don't need to have it all figured out right away. Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. This summer, I have been taking my final class to complete my degree along with my internship at Towson University Admissions. The class is BUSX 460 (Professional Experience), and so far I have learned important concepts and skills that I consider necessary for my professional career.
