At the end of the last rugby season, when asked if I’d like to coordinate the local club’s social calendar because I’m ‘in events’, I politely declined (doing my day job in my time off), but made a bold statement that I’d contribute in some other way. That promise became a reality yesterday; after completing various virtual and in-person training courses and qualifications over the Summer break, I attended the first training session of the season, no longer as a Rugby Mum, but as an U9 Coach for my son’s first year of contact. Oh; and I flew solo, because the other coach was away. I had a session plan, a toy whistle I’d foraged from the playroom and an old expo lanyard…what could possibly go wrong? 🤣 Nervous? Massively. Self-doubt? Bucket loads. Out of my depth? Hugely. BUT - I DID IT, even if it was like herding cats at times…8 year olds have SO much back chat and ZERO attention span. I’m very good at operating in my ‘safe space’ - yesterday taught me I’m not too shabby well outside my comfort zone either. Great to see the roll out of #ActiveStart in North Yorkshire. We've worked closely with Active Cumbria who developed the programme, to train our very own trainers (see Liz Burkinshaw below!) and are now well underway in delivering, thanks to specific health inequalities funding . 🤩 50 people have been through the training 🤩 Nearly 40 settings have an Active Start resource 🤩 100% of learners say their knowledge and awareness of how much activity is needed in the early years has increased 🤩 100% of learners say their understanding of how to include more activity and active play into their day has increased 🤩 100% of learners say their confidence, inspiration and motivation has increased. The training has involved so much discussion which is great! Learners have come away with more ideas for their setting and have been able to talk through some of the challenges they face; for which we are working on some follow up webinars/support. There is no reason at all why you would have noticed this, but I don't post very often on social media. But, as @LYRowing About Us (londonyouthrowing.com) turned 18 years old this year, I wanted to change that. I have, in different guises, been involved with grass root rowing and sport for the last 25 years and feel incredibly lucky to have worked at LYR (and a couple of years @CRIBoston) for the last 17 years. This year LYR invested in a report to determine the ‘so what’ of that time and of LYR flagship project – Active Row. People talk about the great works they are doing, and I applaud everyone that is in this area of sport delivery. It can be incredibly hard and the most rewarding job there is – often on the same day! But I asked the amazing team here at LYR – ‘so what’? What is it we are doing and if we believe we are doing remarkable things for young people across the UK, how do we prove that, how do we talk about those benefits and how do we add detail and data to that work. Earlier this year, we released LYR’s Social Return on Impact Report that looked at the Active Row programme in London. Partnering with @Tideway and State of Life, we asked the big and tough questions. Tough because we did not honestly know what the outcome was going to be. We ‘knew’ that it was effective, but could we prove that? The report is here, and the headline is that Active Row works, and works incredibly well. Sport and physical activity can change lives for the better and provide numerous benefits that I believe are so much wider reaching than being fitter and sportier. What we do makes a real difference and has been making a difference for the last 18 years. As celebrate our milestone, here is to the next 18 years and even more success that cannot always be seen in the many thousands of young people we work with, up and down the UK, every year.
