I volunteered at The Hoboken Shelter, and it was an awesome experience. It taught me how even my (1 person) participation can make a difference to those in need, and importantly making things easy for everyone so that people can utilize the services effectively!
I spent the day sorting through donations, which included separating three HUGE bags of bread donated by local bakeries. This task involved separating the good bread from the stale. After that, I teamed up with another volunteer and made sure that pastries, soap bars, and other food items were portioned properly so that people could easily collect and use them. Putting hygiene protocols into action makes a difference between people consuming and adhering to them. It’s all about making things easy- not just about access or education. I also helped with behind-the-scenes efforts in washing kitchen towels and aprons for the staff and volunteers. It’s not just help for the needy.
This experience taught me how much of a difference even just one person volunteering can make - drops make an ocean. I also learned that one should focus on operations and make things easy for all involved so that adherence is effective. Most importantly, I made friends with other volunteers, and it was overall a fun experience that involved giving back to my community.
Make an impact in someone’s life today. Be a Do-Gooder and get involved- lead through action!
