Over the last few years we have been developing an up-to-date, robust and flexible methodology that could be applied to future #CityLabs. A #CityLab is a participatory research format where the #JRC works in close contact with a specific municipality to collectively gather quantitative and qualitative #data on a specific trend or discuss and spatialise the impact of a specific #urban policy. The topics under observation are place-based and vary according to the urban context being analysed. One big benefit of teaching at Singapore Management University is the many opportunities to learn. This morning's symposium on #SustainableUrbanisation moderated by Prof Orlando Woods gave much food for thought on a topic close to my heart. Since cities are responsible for 70% of CO2 emissions, it's critical that we get much better at greening our cities. MNCs - can drive the growth of #CleanEnergy, for example in countries like Vietnam. In the past MNCs offshored their production to lower their costs, and pushed pollution elsewhere. But today's MNCs are making their offshoring decisions based on the availability of clean energy, leading the green energy transition, as Prof Siqi Zheng showed. DATA - must align #EnvironmetalData with key metrics, to drive a more holistic approach to sustainable future cities. Dr Nai Jia Lee of PropertyGuru Group demonstrated this with a fascinating presentation using insights from property transaction data across Asia. POLICY - must integrate green transport planning with green building codes if we really want #GreenCities, as Prof Phang Sock-Yong showed. WE ALL - must play our part.

Cities face several challenges today, starting from the unpredictability of climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic showed how the magnitude and duration of disruptions are difficult to predict, challenging traditional risk-based management approaches to cope with crises. In this respect, resilience science has been taken up as it highlights the intricate, complex, and interdependent nature of urban systems. While a strict universal definition of resilience is lacking, it generally refers to the capacity to anticipate, withstand, adapt to and recover from shocks and stresses, such as natural disasters, economic downturns, public health crises, and social turmoil. #ICYMI in last November’s #clclectureseries on “Barcelona Superblocks and 50 Micro Seoul: Pioneering Hyper- Local Models for Urban Liveability”, Dr Sergi Sauri from the CENIT - Innovation Unit in Transport at CIMNE (CENIT) and Dr Inhee Kim from The Seoul Institute (SI) presented case studies of innovative city strategies which leverage hyper local models from Barcelona and Seoul. The lecture and the panel discussion that followed, offered insights into how cities may pivot towards more sustainable and liveable built environments amidst a rapidly evolving context, and the complexities of implementing such models.
