“All leaders lead from the front. Whether they think they do or not.” I went out to eat with a team a little while ago. The leader held the door for everyone to enter the restaurant, and then they entered last. Even though they were physically the last person to enter the building, they were still leading from the front. Because every single team member saw what the leader did. And how the leader acted and treated others. When you lead, the people who are following you are paying close attention to everything you choose to do (and what you choose not to), everything you say (or choose not to say) and how you say it. You are the example and role model. Out front in their minds even when you think you are “leading from behind”. Please remember this because people will learn how to be kind (or not) from your actions and words. Then their actions and words will influence others. And theirs others. Yesterday was our final Practice Makes Perfect night (or soft opening if you like) at Hickory’s latest restaurant in Wrexham. These nights serve many purposes, first and foremost they are to help our newest team practice their newly acquired skills in a live restaurant but they are also a great opportunity to network and wow our new friends and neighbours. My favourite part of the whole process however is the final speech before heading into service. A chance to Thank, Inspire, Inform and Motivate our team into service. Never underestimate a pre shift briefing. Wether it’s a small team huddle or a full team brief. This is how we set the tone not just for that service but how we are perceived as leaders. "Thoughts on leadership and taking responsibility as a leader after 30 years" Was it a mistake, or was it a decision? How do you determine accountability when a team member does the wrong thing? When a team member makes a wrong decision, you must determine who is responsible for what occurred before placing blame. If you have educated and trained the team member on the correct way to handle the situation, and if you have established the expectations, they chose to do it their own way. They made a DECISION! If the team member was never shown the right way or if leadership failed to establish the expectation and handled the situation differently from what you had expected, they made a MISTAKE! That's on leadership, and you need to take responsibility as a leader.
