United Nations' Curt Garrigan delivered a keynote on our CDA Spring Conference 2024. In his capacity as Chief of the Sustainable Urban Development Section in the Environment and Development Division of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) with its headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand, Curt gave a keynote titled 'Cities as Global Hot Spots of Climate Action - Resilience through Collaboration, Evidence Based Decisions and Innovation in the 21st Century'. With two thirds of humanity living in the Asia Pacific region already now, more than 50% of the Asia-Pacific population lives in urban areas. Approximately 70% of the region’s emissions come from cities. 99 of the top 100 metropolises facing environmental risks are in the region. Overall, Asia Pacific accounts for more than half of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In his keynote Curt addressed the challenges in this region and talked about steps to be taken towards implementing the UN SDGs and contribute to more resilient and liveable cities in the 21st century. The slides of his speech are now publicly available on our CDA-website here: https://lnkd.in/d-KgdvAF

Today in Bonn, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UN Climate Change, UN Biodiversity, and UN Convention to Combat Desertification launched 'Seeking Synergy Solutions: Four Thematic Reports' by the Expert Group on Climate and Sustainable Development Goals Synergy. Convened by the UN, this expert group includes us, Future Africa UP, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), UK Research and Innovation, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, and UrbanBetter. The report on accelerating action through policy frameworks is co-thematically led by Måns Nilsson, SEI Executive Director and co-authored by Adis Dzebo, SEI Senior Research Fellow. Countries are off track on sustainable development and missing key SDG and Paris Agreement targets. According to Nilsson, this new report guides senior officials on integrating climate and sustainability plans, emphasizing synergy with practical examples and tools. Starting in early 2025, Parties to the Paris Agreement will submit more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions. Dzebo notes this is a chance to boost domestic sustainable development and climate efforts. These four thematic reports will contribute to the 2024 Global Report on Climate and SDG Synergy that will be launched during the 2024 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York in July. The goal is for the report to play a major role in discussions at the Fifth Global Climate and SDG Synergy Conference, set for September 5-6 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Nordic countries continue to lead in progress toward the SDGs, with Finland, Denmark, and Sweden securing the top three spots, followed by Norway (5th) and Iceland (10th). This ranking was highlighted in the Europe Sustainable Development Report 2025, released today. However, the main challenges remain the same as in previous years. Like the rest of Europe, the Nordics face significant challenges in sustainable consumption and production (SDG 12) and climate action (SDG 13). These issues have global implications, as they are linked to substantial negative spillover effects. Once again, this serves as an important reminder for Nordic governments, the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the European Commission to intensify efforts in addressing these challenges. 🏙️ Cities are vulnerable to climate change with 70% of them already experiencing harmful impacts, yet they are also the key to delivering climate solutions! 🔴 If you are working at the intersection of cities and #ClimateAction, join us in a few minutes for the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Ministerial Meeting(s) on Urbanization and Climate Change at #COP29 🇦🇿. For the first time ever, the Ministerial Meeting(s) will include 4 thematic roundtables, offering more opportunities for deeper engagement and collaboration among local, national and global leaders, organizations, and other stakeholders all committed to sustainable urban development. As countries review and revise their national climate plans, we’re reminded that the costs of inaction are steep, with cities facing billions in losses from climate-related events. 📌 We are proud that the impactful discussions feature the active participation of GCoM Global Ambassador & Special Envoy for Cities in #CHAMP Gregor Robertson - who will moderate part of the Opening Plenary - GCoM Board Member Mayor Winny Dogbatse of Kloto I 🇹🇬 & GCoM Regional Ambassador Mayor Mohamed Sefiani of Chefchaouen 🇲🇦. 📽️ Follow live: https://lnkd.in/eW8S_nfU
