These are two recent articles from different parts of the globe that troubled me: South Africa and India. 🇿🇦 https://lnkd.in/eSZS6Nya 🇮🇳 https://lnkd.in/eYFnQHU8 Both seem to suggest that #padel is apparently developing a #reputation as a #premium/ #lifestyle or #business/ #networking product. My initial reaction to this over the last couple of years has been to resist it, challenge it and contradict it. But the sense is becoming increasingly prevalent, when speaking to entrepreneurs seeking investment and when speaking to people with some awareness of the sport (see Episode 14 of All The Angles this week). Is this a #trend, especially in the newer padel markets, that it is difficult to buck? -Do we need to fight it to create some kind of balance or 360 degree offering? -Should we lean into this segment of users and players? -If we are to fight it, how and who should lead the charge? -If we lean into it, what do we gain? What do we lose? -Is padel destined to be the next golf? Can it be the next basketball? #padelfuture #premiumsport #networking #sportbusiness #padelbiz

🚨🚨🚨 EPISODE 14: OUTSIDER VIEW ON PADEL EPISODE READY!!! 🚨🚨🚨 What do you get, what do you learn, when you give two heavyweight #sportsindustry experts a top line summary of where #padel is today, a forum to ask questions, and an opportunity to opine on what padel is and what it can be in the future? A different #perspective. A cold view divorced from the investment, momentum and frothiness that exists inside the ecosystem. The purpose for us was not to pour cold water on anyone or anything for the sake of it. The purpose was to get some speculation that can deliver food for thought, focus and action. Padel hasn't got it all figured out. We all know there are areas that need addressing. Did Roger Mitchell and Eben Novy-Williams see it all clearly? Did they spot the exposed flanks? Did they reach fair conclusions? Did they miss anything? Did they ask the wrong questions? You tell me. You tell us. https://lnkd.in/ehD9peNy

Some investors definitely are more set up for those kind of slow burn, social good projects and their investors join them on that basis. But there aren't many of them around, and of course finding them in a niche area like padel investment is even tougher.

My initial thought was "what's wrong with it becoming the next Golf" great for business, socialising and exercise to a degree. But the more I think about it I feel we should be looking at the other end of the spectrum, how can we make it accessible to all. I'm hearing more and more about people who are taking up sport for the first time in years or even ever, thanks to Padel. This is the angle we also need to promote. Perhaps we should be looking to appeal to the big investors to look at this as more of a social programme rather than just moneymaking! Or am I being naive?

I believe Padel has a huge potential business wise aside from the big audiences on tv/streaming/influencers (which wil make it bigger, super positive, of course) ..in Spain maybe 85%? of the people who play regulary do not follow professional padel...they even do not know who the number 1 is ....padel has a life on itself as a sport apt for eveyone ( tennis, football or basketball is not for eveyone at all ages...and Padel is more demanding and challenging than Pickleball, right?) Definitely worth a follow-up episode
