New Case Study: Telecare Transition in Highland Sheltered Housing Schemes 🧑💻 Highland includes 39 sheltered housing schemes managed by Highland Council, encompassing over 500 properties, along with several amenity housing developments. These properties are primarily located in urban areas, though some are in more rural settings. Previously, services to these housing schemes were managed by nine different housing teams. I recently listened to Governor Newsom's town hall with victims of the Eaton and Palisades fires, and one topic that stuck with me was the fear of change in rebuilding efforts. Change can be scary, especially after experiencing a traumatic event like the wildfires. It's natural to want things to go back to the way they were. But sometimes, change can bring positive opportunities, especially when it comes to rebuilding our communities. Just because a structure is different from what was there before doesn't necessarily mean it will have a negative impact. In fact, it could even improve things. For example, a multi-family unit doesn't have to be a monstrous eyesore. It could be a beautifully designed building that complements the neighborhood's character while providing much-needed housing. As Daniel Parolek so eloquently describes in his book, "Missing Middle Housing," there's a spectrum of housing options between single-family homes and large apartment complexes that can inject vitality into communities while maintaining their unique charm. These options include: Single-family homes with ADUs Duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes Bungalow and cottage courts Courtyard apartments Mixed-use complexes We can use this opportunity to make things function better. We can incorporate sustainable building practices, create more resilient structures, and design spaces that foster community and connection. One of the key principles behind the regeneration of Stevenage Town Centre is the introduction of town centre living. The Guinness Partnership, one of England’s largest housing associations, is delivering 526 new homes on the former Matalan site in Danesgate. The overall plan involves the construction of 526 one and two-bedroomed apartments along with 739 sq. m of flexible commercial space located at street level which aims to create active street frontages. With funding from Homes England, the first phase of development consists of two buildings providing 143 one and two-bedroomed apartments. All the new homes will be offered as affordable tenures, including social rent, providing new and much needed low-cost homes in the heart of Stevenage.
