Racial animus resulted in exceptions to the Fair Labor Standards Act, including the agricultural exception, which today continues to have disparate impact on minorities. Children as young as 12 can perform arduous agricultural work in a majority of states. This hazardous work exposes children to injury and illness from pesticide exposure, while the long hours make it difficult for children to continue with their education. Bills to remedy this- including the Children's Act for Responsible Employment and Farm Safety and the Children Don’t Belong on Tobacco Farms Act languish in committee. We need to pass this legislation and protect our children from hazardous work.
