Department for Energy Security and Net Zero awards £1.3m to ‘#V2X FastHub’ solar car park project to explore ways of resolving issue of intermittent energy supply from #renewablesources. Generating energy from #solar or #wind can depend on factors such as the weather. What’s more, the times when we can generate most energy, such as in the heat of the summer, can be just when there is least need of energy of heating. Then there are the issues involved in connecting any new energy-generating system to the #nationalgrid. In short, supply and demand doesn’t always match up, meaning energy produced from renewable sources might not be there when we need it. One proposed solution is to draw energy from the batteries in electric vehicles (#EVs) that are not being otherwise used at the time, effectively turning parked cars into grid assets. Of course, this is more easily said than done but the government is now investing in a project to explore the idea more fully. The V2X Fasthub project is led by 3ti, a company that designs, installs, funds and operates so-called ‘solar car-parks’. These are ordinary car parks with a canopy of #solarpanels fitted above parking spaces. The larger the car park, the more energy can be generated – and used not only to power cars parked there, but local buildings and amenities, too. The new project involves the Papilio3 modular system launched by 3ti in 2022. Manufactured from old shipping containers, Papilio3 can be deployed in just 24 hours, converting 14 car parking spaces into 12 #EVcharging stations powered by the system’s own solar panels. In the V2X FastHub project, these Papilio3 systems are to be fitted with bi-directional DC charging and associated power management systems, allowing energy to be supplied to and drawn from #EVbatteries.  The ambitious project involves a 17-month collaboration involving 3ti and a number of other companies with expertise in the area. This schedule includes a six-month real-world demonstration of its benefits. 3ti is to lead the ambitious project, and will deliver a customised Papilio3 with smart grid controls and a 280 kWh DC battery. Advanced EV power solutions provider Turbo Power Systems (#TPS) will harness its DC microgrid systems to manage the #bidirectional charging technology through both #CCS and CHAdeMO EV charge points. Smart energy company GridBeyond will oversee energy management and aggregation services through its flexible energy management system (#EMS). EV & #decarbonisation experts Cenex will host the vehicle trial, including the procurement of the trial vehicle fleet, data capture, analysis and final report to Innovate #UK. While charging my car at Electrify America yesterday, I noticed that Electrify America has achieved its goal of 100% renewable energy use for its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. Through renewable energy credits and now direct renewable generation like its new 75MW Solar GlowTM 1 project, Electrify America is delivering carbon-free charging experiences nationwide. This is a monumental sustainability accomplishment for EV infrastructure with a tangible environmental impact. In 2022 alone, Electrify America powered over 5 million charging sessions, enabled 493 million electric miles driven and avoided 21 million gallons of gas consumption. With transportation being the US's highest greenhouse gas emitting sector, initiatives like this accelerating EV adoption through renewable-powered charging are pivotal. And Electrify America is just getting started. With Solar GlowTM 1's 225 GWh projected annual output comparable to powering 500 EVs simultaneously, Electrify America is future-proofing itself for even greater EV growth ahead. The company expects charging demand to continue rising exponentially with EV ownership rates. Thanks to forward-thinking EV infrastructure leaders like Electrify America for their commitment to renewable energy. This strongly signals consumers that charging can be an emissions-free experience, helping ease range anxiety. It also sets an example for other networks to follow suit as we build a sustainable EV ecosystem. Great article from the Fleet EV News team. One of the main negatives of EV has been the access for them to be charged from renewable energy sources, rather than coal fired power stations. ‘Solar just makes sense’ That's it, that's the TLDR. The longer version is in the article, which notes how solar is the keystone in an increasingly sophisticated and agile consumer-side energy system. Solar is often now used to charge a home battery, or an EV (aka a battery on wheels), and becomes part of a "smart" home ecosystem of on-site energy generation and consumption. In 2022 in California, nearly 1/5th of all residential solar installations included battery storage attachments. With California's NEM 3.0 now in effect, that will increase dramatically since it makes the economic case for residential solar+storage that much stronger. But it's not just California. According to Forbes, solar alone can save the average US homeowner $1,500 per year in energy bills.
