This video is from one of my site visits in Hanover, VA. They were digging test pits here to see what type of soil was there. This was all previously used soil, so the client can decide (if it's strong enough) to use it to fill in somewhere else on the site, or they can sell it! As my first semester of graduate school is underway, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my internship this summer at the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This was my first internship that revolved around research. It was such an amazing experience learning about civil engineering from the research and development perspective. Federal Highway is working on amazing research and I am so humble to have been a small part of that effort. I am so appreciative to have networked with industry professionals and I am grateful to the ones who took the time to talk with me and share their experiences with me. As a student, I am always looking forward to talking with professionals and learning about everyone’s diverse backgrounds and the paths they took to reach where they are now. This has been a memorable experience and I am thankful that I had an amazing mentor who taught me technical and professional skills. My dream job growing up was to be a scientist working in a lab; I am so proud to tell my younger self that I had the opportunity to work in a leading research lab with an engineering background! 👩🏾🔬🦺🚧 #FHWA #DOT #transportation #civilengineering

At DOT, our summer interns take part in professional development and unique opportunities. Last week interns participated in a fireside chat with Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Under Secretary Christopher Coes, Chief of Staff Mohsin Syed, Deputy Secretary Chief of Staff Sabrina Sussman, and FTA Administrator Veronica Vanterpool. Interns across a variety of programs engaged directly with our leadership team and shared their questions about the future of American transportation. 🌍🚉

On June 6-8 I was able to attend the 6th International Symposium on Pavement, Roadway, and Bridge Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA2024)! I am so grateful to have been able to attend- I learned more about concrete and EPDs, sustainable pavement case studies, quantitative measures of social sustainability, and more!
