Maynooth University and IADT have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to formalise their collaboration on postgraduate research. The partnership underscores the importance of inter-institutional higher education to meet the evolving needs of the economy and society. By leveraging their complementary strengths, MU and IADT aim to address the growing demand for innovative research in the creative industries – a sector critical to Ireland’s economic future as outlined in the recently launched Roadmap for the Digital Creative Industries. David Smith, President of IADT, added: “This agreement is a significant step forward for IADT in its transformation and development, opening new Level 10 pathways for our students and graduates to build and advance their careers. Partnering with Maynooth University provides our students and staff with access to a dynamic and supportive research environment, enhancing our ability to conduct impactful, industry-aligned research. And we are off! Delighted to kick off our Innovation Growth Lab by NESTA project entitled Making Academics Knowledge Exchange Ready (MAKERs) at Ulster University with colleagues at Ulster University Business School. This exciting project is in partnership with colleagues Northumbria University and The Manchester Metropolitan University. MAKERs os specifically part of the University-Industry Impact Accelerator where we have been invovled in developing a proof of concept study to grow knowledge exchange within Higher Education Institutions. This pilot involves an experimental design where we expose academics to knowledge exchange training and then a control group to bid writing training to examine the effect of training on aspirations, intentions, motivations and actions to undertake knowledge exchange. The feedback from the two workshops on 10th April at Ulster University Belfast was phenomenal. Unanimously the academics participating agreed on the value of the training and the need for KE training. The training was seen to nurture confidence in staff to do knowledge exchange and also, for those with less experience in this field, to open their mind to what knowledge and skills they can bundle an offer for businesses seeking knowledge exchange. The purpose of this pilot across the 3 institutions and two nations in the UK is to validate the need for such training. Indeed, so far the pilot has shown without exception, that the call is now upon us as a team to build this training and knowledge exchange interventions to deliver real impact to higher education institutions and businesses. What could the #future of NZ #universities entail? What would big picture thinking look like? Rather than viewing the Gluckman University Advisory Group Review as a threat, what if we saw it as an opportunity? My friend, colleague and academic collaborator Chris Jones, Associate Professor in History at University of Canterbury died very suddenly and far too young, very recently. We worked together on a number of courses and projects, including the UC 150 History for which Chris very ably acted as chair of the Editorial board. In a world of far too many sole focus academics, Chris was a true intellectual. Our last collaboration was our response to the the call for submissions by the Gluckman University Advisory Group. We called it Universities Aotearoa Vision 2050 and it was our manifesto for change. At its centre is what we termed the Rutherford-Ngata model: "We identify a key weakness of current New Zealand graduates as a tendency to couple early specialisation with a lack of a substantial knowledge base. The result is engineers, lawyers, scientists, and social scientists who may understand their own subjects exceptionally well but who either fail to understand fully the society in which their skills are required or to understand fully the solutions offered by science, technology, and innovation. The Rutherford-Ngata Model has a simple aim: to produce literate science graduates, numerate arts graduates, and well-rounded professional graduates. It will do so by creating a common core of knowledge for all undergraduate students. Establishing this basic foundation will be an essential first step before any student progresses to a professional or general degree. In turn, graduates from this model who go on to form the backbone of the New Zealand research environment will, by drawing on a wider knowledge base, be able to offer solutions better suited to the New Zealand situation." We were going to expand this manifesto into a book; but as it was a true collaboration that will not happen. It will remain a manifesto, now offered into the public domain. ARE UNIVERSITIES STILL TIMELY? Provocative question: what is nowadays - with the exception of practicals - the added value of physical #universities as opposed to #online #learning and online discussion groups. Aren’t online universities not much more democratic, allowing even people in third world countries to benefit from higher #education. And do we really need in one country 50 different universities with 50 different lecturers giving 50 different lectures on the same topic?

As part of the YUFE Alliance we are able to offer our university staff Europe-wide oppurtunities to develop and grow their academic and professional pursuits. Employees of the University of Bremen can now apply for three different continuing education programs offered by the YUFE Alliance. The events will take place in the period between Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. Participation is free of charge. The three programs are offered in English and have different focuses: 🌟 The Research Leadership Programme is designed for individuals who lead a research group. 🌟 The Staff Development Programme is aimed at staff involved in human resources development. 🌟 The Open Science Programme is intended for those who develop open science offerings at their university and advise researchers. The training courses not only give participants the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the respective field.
